2 busy roads in Ryde have reopened following the completion of works by Network Rail to renovate a pair of bridge decks over the Island Line.
As exclusively reported by Island Echo last February, the bridges at both Rink Road and Park Road have been upgraded as part of the latest investment in the Island’s railway between Ryde and Shanklin.
A 5-month scheme was initially planned to start in September 2023 but the project was scaled down and the works rescheduled. The re-scheduled works were incorporated into the month-long closure of the entire Island Line in September 2024, causing less overall disruption.
As well as the work to the bridge decks themselves, there is a new slightly-altered road layout, metalwork and signage too. Both decks are also narrower than before so that new wider pedestrian walkways could be installed.
It is hoped the works will extend the life expectancy of the bridges for a further 120 years.
About time, the signage was confusing.
