Brading Haven Gig Rowing Club has taken on one of the UK’s most iconic rowing challenges, completing the 22-mile Great River Race in London and raising more than £2,000 for Mountbatten Hospice on the Isle of Wight.
The gruelling event, known as the “rowing marathon of the Thames”, saw over 300 boats of all shapes and sizes tackle the stretch from Millwall to Richmond, passing under 28 bridges along the way.
The Brading Haven crew were joined by 2 rowers from Yarmouth Gig Rowing Club, who have been training alongside them in preparation for the challenge.
Rowing Captain Sandie Gallard-Judd has said:
“It was the most amazing day – rowing under 28 bridges with hundreds of other boats powering down the Thames. The atmosphere was incredible.
“We were so grateful for the support of friends and family who travelled up to London and cheered us on from the bridges. Hearing our names being shouted as we passed gave us such a lift.”
As well as completing the demanding course, the team has so far raised more than £2,000 for Mountbatten Hospice, with donations continuing to come in. The charity provides end-of-life care and bereavement support to Isle of Wight residents and relies heavily on community fundraising.
Sandie added:
“We are absolutely over the moon to have finished the race and to have raised such a fantastic amount for Mountbatten. It was tough at times, but knowing the difference the money will make really kept us going.
“We want to thank everyone who donated and supported us – it means the world.”
The Great River Race is not only a test of endurance but also a celebration of teamwork and community spirit, values reflected in the efforts of the Brading Haven and Yarmouth crews.
