Firefighters have been tackling a large bin fire in the heart of Newport Town Centre tonight (Thursday).
Smoke filled Scarrots Lane at around 20:30 when a red Biffa bin was seemingly set alight.
As well as causing damage to the bin itself, heat damage has been caused to a refrigerator left at the rear of Richmond’s Bakery.
Thankfully, swift actions by fire crews from Newport resulted in the fire being contained before it could spread to the nearby building.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has now stood down from the incident.
UPDATE – The incident is being treated as arson due to the suspicious nature of the fire.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has been made aware.

It’s obviously business waste the business should be more responsible by having locks put on the bins , and just look at the state of the area what an eyesore, Newport for ya I suppose
You old fart pick yourself up and go
Says a business owner from Newport ,obviously your fridge freezer dumped as well
Agree, the area should be kept clean and clear. This probably was kids getting their weird, sick pleasure from setting light to it.
Biffs bins are fitted with locks.probably could not be asked to lock it up.Quite agree what an eyesore come on Richmond Bakery show some pride and keep this area clean and tidy.
Surely this bin should be locked.Imagine in some homeless person crept in during the night.Could be collected with the rubbish and never seen again.
Good idea for health and safety and environmental health to pop round for a check up.Must be breaches of regulations here even by what can be seen in the photo.
If you walk around Newport these day you will see litter everywhere, when the bin collection has been done there’s loads just flying around, none bothering to pick it up. It’s disgusting, youngsters dropping rubbish, spitting, causing havoc in and around the oap homes, Brocken glass..you name it it’s tossed.
