The British bed retailer Bensons for Beds is to open a new store on the Isle of Wight. The national firm, which sells a diverse range of beds, mattresses and bedroom furniture, is taking over the former Pavers store at Town Gate Retail Park in Newport. Up until 2017, the Town Centre premises off St James’ Street was occupied by Brantano Footwear, which was then bought out by Pavers when the firm fell into administration. It was announced back in April that Pavers was to close its doors for good after 8 years on the Island. The company’s lease on the retail park unit was coming to an end, with the landlord also implementing a rent increase. Now, it has been confirmed that Bensons for Beds will be moving in. Currently, the nearest store is in Portsmouth. No opening date for Newport has been revealed, but the store is expected to open within a matter of months. A spokesperson for the chain has said:
“We are always looking for opportunities to bring the Bensons brand to different areas across the UK to make sure as many people as possible have access to a better sleep experience through our quality products and expert advice. “Newport on the Isle of Wight is one of many areas that we are excited to be bringing the Bensons For Beds brand to very soon, and we look forward to confirming more store details in due course.”
It’s not the first bed store to feature at Town Gate… between 2016 and 2018 Mattressman occupied the unit next door, the former Blockbusters store. The closure came in the same week that Maplins closed its doors in Newport.
