Ash Lane in Gunville has been crowned the winner of this year’s Light up the Wight Christmas lights competition!
Over 1,600 votes were cast by Island Echo readers throughout December after downloading the unique map and venturing out in their cars – and on the sold-out Southern Vectis tour bus – to see the wonderful array of dazzling Christmas lights displays across the Island.
The votes have now been tallied up – and added to the judge’s score – to reveal the Top 3 displays for 2024…
For the first time, Ash Lane has taken the top spot and has secured £400 in prize money. Homeowner Lee Hayden welcomed both the Southern Vectis bus tour and a local coach tour this year, with families descending on Gunville night after night to see the expanded 2024 display.
Another firm favourite, Goldcrest Close in Carisbrooke, has secured 2nd place in this year’s competition and £250 in prize money, courtesy of sponsors Southern Vectis. Matt Whitham put on a slightly scaled-back but still impressive display this year and has reaffirmed his position as an Island favourite.
Rounding off the podium in 3rd place this year – their first time securing a Top 3 finish – is Victoria Road in Sandown. The display, put together by Leon Girling and his family, not only raised £370 for charity but attracted a celebrity visitor too!
Joshua Herdman – who played Goyle in the Harry Potter films – paid a visit on Christmas Eve, admiring the unique Potter-themed Lego display. The Girlings take home £100 in prize money.
Light up the Wight will return in 2025, with entries set to open in November. For updates see www.islandecho.co.uk/xmas.
