A 39-year-old man from Newport who was arrested on suspicion of arson after a flat fire broke out in Pan on Wednesday morning has been released and the investigation dropped.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service was mobilised to Robin Hood Street at 06:15 when neighbours reported seeing flames and smoke coming from the window of the maisonette property.
4 appliances from Ventnor, Shanklin, East Cowes and Freshwater swiftly arrived at the scene and tackled the 1st-floor maisonette blaze with 2 hose reel jets and 4 breathing apparatuses.
Later that day, a 39-year-old was arrested on suspicion of arson.
However, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed to Island Echo that he has since been released with no further action being taken.
The fire is no longer being treated as suspicious.

So this poor person has been wrongly accused, suffered a great deal of stress, public believing they did it – then no longer suspicious and released. What’s police doing? either there was evidence at the time or not. Could of waited for evidence before arresting. Think if this had been me being accused something I was inocent of I would of had a heart attack.
Yes, that’s one in the eye for all those armchair heroes that were slagging this person off without knowing any facts at all. Pathetic people.
It’s called “The Isle of Wight disease”symptoms are assuming you know all the facts from the comfort of your troll cupboard”sadly it’s terminal!.
The police everywhere are out of control. They arrest willy nilly. Time was when an investigation would have to be conducted and concluded before any arrests were made. Nowadays the police subject the first person they come across with the vaguest of connections to the event to the indignity of handcuffs, arrest, the cells, publicity – and then grudgingly release the innocent person as if casting aside the debris of a professional disappointment. If they ever apologise I have not heard of it.
I totally agree!!!!
Ive been through similar circumstances
If it had been some old git in his retirement bungalow he wouldn’t have been arrested. Single middle aged bloke in a council flat and he’s assumed to be a wrong-un.
I see the repulsive “Miss Sensible” was one of those jumping to conclusions. That one has a sewer for a mind.
Live in a council flat by any chance, mate?
No, “mate”.
I live in my own home, which is fully paid for and probably earn more in a week than you do in a month.
It is almost always the failures in life who bitch and whine and blame their naff lives on others (immigrants, “wokes”, “socialists”, “snowflakes”, “millennials”, etc).
Post body, tubby
Pan fire or fire in Pan?
Where there is smoke there is usually fire.
He should sue them for wrongful arrest
And if they didn’t arrest the person, and they did a runner on the next flight out of here, then were found guilty you would be moaning about that too wouldn’t you?
I completely agree!!
Everyone moans that these ‘druggies and lowlives’ are everywhere and cause issues with fighting etc but when the police do try to act swiftly you all sl*g them off?! Make your mind up!! I applaud the old bill for taking who they thought caused a fire on purpose! If they got released and the investigation dropped then fair play but if someone had died in that fire and no one got arrested then what?!
Keyboard warriors!!
Strange how the far left fascist call everyone Trolls simply for having their say, these far left Marxist, socialist are a pain in the ass…
He wasn’t charged but arrested because he may have committed a crime. They investigated & released him. It’s not that unusual
You think that if he’d been an old bloke in a retirement bungalow they would have done the same?
It’s social profiling, pure and simple. Poor and living in a council flat? Must be a wrong-un. That’s their attitude
Maybe they should start arresting old farts are seen walking past schools at kicking out time because, you know, just in case.
