Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward after an elderly couple in their 80s were knocked down by an Island Roads van whilst shopping in Newport on Friday.
It was just before 11:50 that emergency services responded to reports that an elderly man and woman had been hit by an Iveco van on a pedestrian crossing at Church Litten, outside Marks & Spencers.
The Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance was scrambled to the scene as part of the response, landing in nearby Church Litten Park.
The flying doctors subsequently flew 1 of the casualties to Southampton General Hospital. The other was taken by land ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital. Both have serious injuries.
Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary are appealing for witnesses to Friday’s collision.
Officers investigating the exact circumstances of the collision are keen to speak with anyone who may be able to assist with the ongoing enquiries.
If you were in the area at the time, or in particular if you have dash cam or any other footage of the incident, then you should call 101, quoting the reference 44230036107.
It has been confirmed to Island Echo that the elderly couple are aged in their 80s and are grandparents from Newport.

Is there no cctv in this town any more?? Jesus
The CCTV is still in operating. Dash cams can give an indication of the nature of driving during and before the accident
They should have gone to Specsavers.
Police are asking for Dash cam Footage of the incident , Why , there are at least three Council Video cameras in the main photograph .
They are not cameras, they are sensors for the crossing lights
I was on my way to get my yellow stickered microwave meals for the week around that time but I never saw anything
Clearly not me as it doesn’t include the official Smiffy logo.
Utterly pathetic that this site let’s people post using the same name as an existing user and needs no email verification.
Any news or update on the couple?
I really hope they will both be ok. And I hope the driver who hit them is too. Very traumatic for all concerned
You’d think council vans would be fitted with trackers an cams.. So firms can keep an eye on driving skills and any accidents can be covered.
Did you not watch Vera last night, new series and blow me it included incidents of dangerous driving from Council initiated sections!
stupid place to have a crossing. why is it not back 30ft rather than right on the corner
Perhaps all council and work vehicles should be made to have cameras fitted. That way it would keep an eye on the way some of these are driven like they have been stolen! I do hope the elderly couple make a speedy recovery
