ANOTHER FLOOD WARNING FOR THE ISLE OF WIGHT WITH YAR VALLEY UNDER THREAT

The Environment Agency has issued a second flood warning for the Isle of Wight – sitting alongside 4 flood alerts- following a night of heavy rain, with those living in Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge and Alverstone urged to take action.

It’s said that the water level in the Eastern Yar at Alverstone is high and rising. In the last 13 hours, 34mm of rain has been recorded at Wroxall.

Golf Links Road, the access track at Horringford, cycle tracks, and footpaths across the Upper Yar Valley will soon become impassable.

From 16:00 this afternoon, in Alverstone, the main road will flood near the main road bridge. Water will begin to surround property in Alverstone and Langbridge, flooding a small number of properties. Garden flooding is expected at Whitwell High Street.

River levels will continue to rise at Alverstone at least 21:00 this evening, but thankfully dry weather is expected until Sunday giving the river a chance to return to normal levels.

Local residents are being told to install flood protection now and leave it in place until Friday.

During the early hours of this morning a flood warning was issued for the Lukely Brook in Newport, with flood alerts issued for Ryde St John’s, the Eastern Yar, the River Medina and Gurnard Luck.
