A car ended up in a ditch at the side of the road following a collision with a Royal Mail lorry on the outskirts of Ryde this morning (Thursday).
The crash on Beaper Shute, near the junction with Harding Shute, occurred shortly before 06:20.
Island Echo understands a red VW Polo was attempting an overtake of the lorry whilst travelling towards Sandown but oncoming traffic forced the driver to take evasive action, leading to the collision.
It’s said the Polo went into the rear of the lorry before leaving the carriageway and coming to a rest in the ditch.
Emergency services have not been called to the scene and the road remains fully open as the vehicles have very quickly been moved off the main Ryde to Sandown road.
The VW Polo – which has sustained significant front end damage – is now hidden out of site in a nearby woodyard having been moved by a telehandler. The Royal Mail lorry has also been moved to the private property as insurance details are exchanged.

Given this was a case of dangerous and careless driving it should be reported to police, maybe no injuries but how in daylight do you hit rear of lorry and end up in ditch ?.
Very easily I imagine. You start overtaking, oncoming traffic approaches. You abort said overtake but the lorry is braking too. You collide with back of lorry while heavily braking. I don’t know about the ditch part. Probably steering damage or just panic. The worst you can say about it is his car is too slow, oncoming traffic too fast or his overtake was badly timed. Overtaking itself is not careless driving. Personally I think more people need practice doing it.
“You start overtaking, oncoming traffic approaches”
if it wasn’t clear to overtake before you started
(or you didn’t have enough visibility to tell that it was clear, and would remain clear long enough to overtake),
you shouldn’t have started the manouver!
“Overtaking itself is not careless driving”,
no… but overtaking, when you haven’t made sure it is clear to do, so is!
Well it’s great to be perfect. Your absolutely right by the way. That doesn’t preclude any of what I said. I’ve overtaken vehicles on a clear road only to have said vehicle speed up or someone come in the other direction at 100 mph or someone appear from an entrance you didn’t know was there. Sh*t happens, it doesn’t make it careless.
Any sympathy for VW driver?
So WTF is a “telehandler”? Someone who works at Curry’s?
I thought someone would ask this! its a kind of forklift that farmers use.
and on building sites
Second class driving must be stamped out.
well that will be 99.9% of island drivers
The level of your mentality beggars belief! Why don’t you walk into a busy pub and shout that out. Didn’t think so!
In the words of Ive searle, tarmac it. Oh yeah it’s already tarmac
good old island driving it will never get better
not sure why you think this comment does anything but makes local – I mean born and bred Islanders so annoyed they’d like to take you to task! Most local bred real islanders appreciate it takes no time at all to get where you are needing to be,given the island is so small. I think if you don’t like the way we drive over here the best thing for you to do is migrate to the north island!
Will the post be late or is that the last post.
Overtaking with the volume of traffic today is pointless as a Lorry driver I often get overtaken but generally the car that overtakes is just in front not got further than one car length 40 years ago wouldn’t of been a problem but times have changed
With all the bad drivers on the Island it doesn’t say much for the quality of the Driving instructors or the Test centre does it ?
It was a stupid place to overtake in the first place.
Since when do you overtake on a bend ??
Anyone overtaking along such a road should be banged up for at least
5 years.
They could have killed an innocent person.
Where is the Law on this Island?
Seems to work on an who you know basis to what gets done about a crime
Tell me about it, a little scrot in out street , has been Driving an untaxed car for the past 8 months, and has no insurance . he has been reported to DVLA by at least 20 people, but they don’t want to know. i phoned 101 and was told we will catch him one day.
Looks like this idiot was driving like an arse and trying to over take on an ”S” bend with double white lines in the center. Purely a case of dangerous driving, so why is plod not nicking him.
