Aspects of a major housing development in Shalfleet have been called ‘bonkers’, but the scheme was given the go-ahead earlier this week. Councillor Matt Price said it was ‘absolutely crazy’ to consider the application for Shalfleet because it would encourage more parents to use their cars during drop-off and pick-up times. Concerns had been raised about the lack of path between the proposed 70 new houses at Burt Close and Shalfleet Primary School – 700 metres down the road. There were also complaints about affordability, sustainability and claims it would dramatically change the village’s character. The proposals have received more than 90 objections in total. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee was split on the proposal from The Warlands Partnership, with 4 votes in favour and 4 against. The decision rested with Councillor Warren Drew who, as chair, typically abstains. His casting vote was made in favour of the application. Of the 70 houses, 27 will be dubbed as affordable, with Councillor Geoff Brodie successfully adding a condition that would make 70% of the affordable properties rented. Cllr Brodie said the demand for the scheme is overwhelming and the Island has an ‘obscenely long’ housing needs register. On the matter of a safe route to school, officers said walking along the main road’s grass verge was unsafe, particularly with the speed of traffic, but revealed there had been issues securing land for a path. The developer has agreed to contribute £70,000 to the council’s public rights of way team, with the aim of improving the pedestrian links, if they can be agreed in the future.

More homes for the rich
It’s too late, my children have moved the the mainland with my grandchildren
Better prospects on the mainland, the island is full of the
smell of drugs.
More sheds I expect, looks like the old Acorn Estate in East Cowes.
Of the 70 houses, 27 will be dubbed as affordable, with Councillor Geoff Brodie successfully adding a condition that would make 70% of the affordable properties rented.
meaning not one self respecting, private buyer will want to purchase and live in the other houses, as the affordable and rented, will be owned by housing groups/buy to let and other private landlords, who will simply let the properties to the council, who will fill them with benefit leeches, immigrants, junkies/dossers and other low lives.
it will end up being shafleets answer to spanners close in chale, slade road in ryde, arctic road in cowes and most of pan estate in newport.
Ew, could you imagine living near a renter
Hopefully those in favour of this & all other large developments on this Island will find themselves at the end of a very long queue, when needing urgent lifesaving medical treatment at our ridiculously overcrowded hospital.
At a guess, I would say none of these planning idiots have needed the services of St Mary’s Hospital in recent years. But when you do & your waiting hours upon hours to be seen. Take yourself for a walk to the toilet, look in the mirror & your see who’s to blame. A total bloody idiot !!
Each and every one of us that voted to cut the NHS budget is to blame!
Bonkers doesn’t do it justice. Permission to build 70 homes on a greenfield site in Shalfleet! Shalfleet! That is insane. People need affordable homes in Newport and Ryde. There were 90 objections and: “The decision rested with Councillor Warren Drew who, as chair, typically abstains. His casting vote was made in favour of the application.” Wow. This deal stinks to high heaven. This whole council is a farce.
Lot of fellow masons breathing down his back most likely ?
With the sweat dripping off their chins …
Please be upstanding for the farcical Planning Committee hijacked once again by Councillor Brodie’s ramblings into the world of the contrary.
Gasp open mouthed as he ignores opinions of the local residents, the Parish Council, Island Roads, impact on the environment, diminishing community assets, NPPF, The Island Plan and gives the nod to concrete over some more Greenfield – while at the same time, pretending he gives a toss about the Island homeless.
Meantime… Simon Jacobs (The Developer) lines himself up for another big fat pay day and walks away with a smirk stretching all the way from his home on the mainland to the toxic legacy set to be inflicted on Shalfleet.
Thank you IOW Planning you’ve done us proud.
Agreed, I swear even if every islander objected to housing developments this council would still ignore us and vote build!!! So much for being public servants
More properties not needed, check on rightmove to see all the
properties available on the Island
The Island’s breeding parasites are being spread everywhere now to ruin all decent peoples lives. As more and more illegal immigrants fill our country, then ever more displaced indigenous people will come here to escape such adding to our woes.
See the real reason for the ruination of our Island and country.
It is not coincidence imo that massive building has occurred SINCE massive arrivals into the country
Why did the Tories double immigration? We need UKIP to castrate all the poors and immigrants!
The only parasite is you, chum.
More flooding, another poisoned village, more free homes for the snort/piss/smack heads, more bullshit about affordable homes, that no one wants to buy on a life long mortgage surrounded by it and more brown envelopes to get it approved.
BSC?
Bronze Swimming Certificate, probably.
What an absolute joke. Why would you allow to build on a greenfield site. The councillors won’t read this but ‘you are all corrupt and disgusting’. The west wight is going to be ruined by this, west of Newport is the last half decent place remaining on the island.
Firstly make the affordale homes exclusively for islanders, not the imported third world, or
victimsof another war started by the ruling elite. Also I know it
s a radical idea, - but bring back a school bus - we pay enough taxes and parking charges for this wonderful council, so free up some sheckles from thedont know what gender todaythey are types and start giving the taxpayer some sort of public service back….. the clue is the hint of doing us all apublic servicebefore we turn and dig our heels in…… there are only a handful of them versus thousands of us.Let them not forget.
Just checked the addresses for all the Councillors – NOT one of them lives in Shalfleet.
Will they look as ugly as those in Burt Close – surely someone can design something that suits the village. Of course, they shouldn’t be building on this greenfield site in the first place. Well done to the planners – loo k after those brown envelopes.
Nothing’s affordable with this council and we already know when they’ve made up their minds about something it doesn’t matter how many vote against they will go ahead and do it anyway .
The houses will either be cheap shit or for the super rich .
Our one hospital which has moved too many departments to the mainland will overstretch it even more .
And as for cars , this islands roads will not be able to sustain much more . The evidence is all around.
But heyho council do what you do best , f..k everything and everyone up and then raise the cost of everything to pay for your cock ups
‘the Island has an ‘obscenely long’ housing needs register’
So, if that’s true, why is the Council offering homes to people from the mainland and abroad?
It simply doesn’t make sense.
These people on the housing register are not homeless, but instead they put their names on the list to eventually get a state subsidised low rent property. They can afford to buy a cheap flat in Newport but they think they deserve a nice new three-bedroom house at our expense. They can go whistle.
They’re not, unless there is a specific care need and mainlanders already have links here.
Another piece in the concrete jungle jigsaw……….
