Monkey Haven Primate Rescue Centre – based near Newport – are attempting to raise £10,000 for vital veterinary treatment for their gibbon Xhabu, who fell ill last week.
Their Xhabu Recovery Appeal has already raised close to £5,000 since it was launched 7 days ago .
Xhabu underwent life-saving surgery on Wednesday after showing concerning symptoms. His carers noticed he was off-colour in the morning and began vomiting, prompting them to contact the vet. Despite close monitoring, his discomfort grew, leading to an urgent vet visit.
During surgery, a blockage was discovered that required immediate removal to prevent life-threatening complications. The next 24 hours were critical, but Xhabu pulled through, receiving dedicated care from his carers throughout the night.
Although it was a close call, Xhabu is now on the road to recovery.
Monkey Haven Primate Rescue Centre have said via the Go Fund Me page for Xhabu:
“As a charity, we rely heavily on donations, including admission tickets.
“With our closing date of November 3rd and the toughest time of year ahead, we’re launching the Xhabu Recovery Appeal to help cover vet bills and ongoing care costs.
“Every donation makes a huge difference, and we are incredibly grateful for any support you can give.”
