A 2-car collision is causing travel disruption on one of the Isle of Wight’s busiest roads this morning (Tuesday), as Islanders head back to work after the bank holiday weekend.
A Ford Kuga and a Kia Soul – owned by the Isle of Wight Council – have been involved in a side-on smash on Fairlee Road, at the junction with Halberry Lane.
Significant front-end damage has been caused to both vehicles, but no serious injuries are thought to have been sustained.
The crash has occurred at the lane for vehicles turning right into Halberry Lane from the Newport direction, blocking the inbound side of the road.
Southern Vectis Routes 5 and 9 buses heading into Newport are diverting via Halberry Lane to Staplers Road until further notice.
UPDATE @ 08:15 – Police, paramedics and firefighters are all on scene.
Traffic is building as rush hour gets underway, with queues extending back to Racecourse Roundabout.
It is the second road traffic collision involving a Council-owned pool car in the past few days. A VW Up was involved in a head-on smash at Whippingham on Saturday, as previously reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 09:44 – The Isle of Wight Council has commented on this morning’s crash, and the crash on Saturday.

[…] 2-CAR MORNING SMASH BLOCKS MAIN ROAD INTO NEWPORT […]
No NUMPTIES stop at giveway jjunctions or roundabouts
NOT TO MENTION THE NUMPTIES WHO CANNOT WAIT
BEHIND PARKED VEHICLES EVEN DUST CARTS
The stupid B’stards pull out and drive towards oncoming
vehicles
MOST UNSAFE ROADS IN THE COUNTRY DUE TO NUMPTIES
IT IS NOT THE ROADS FAULT, BUT THE NUMPTIES DRIVING ON THEM.
Put your phones down and concentrate on driving
They are not the most unsafe roads in the country for your information, far from it.
Try establishing some facts before spurting out your normal BS and yes working in the emergency services for 30+ years does allow me to speak the facts and not some made up fancy of yours.
30 + years it’s about time you had an eye test
well overdue.
Where else in the country do numpties smash into
Traffic lights and crash vehicles and end up on their
roof.
You obviously ain’t attending to the accidents.
More bad driving on the Iow
More utter shit driving on the island..
The island would be much safer with driverless cars only
No more speeding, no more drink and drug driving, no more
crashes, no more parking on double yellow lines or pavements.
The island would be like Sark (paradise)
