With a strong sense of nostalgia in the air, visitors to Sandown Airport enjoyed the 1940s vibes of the ‘Flying Forties’ event last weekend (20th – 21st July). The well-received event, presented jointly by WAM (Wight Aviation Museum) and Vectis 40s Vintage, included vintage and military vehicles, 1940s displays, with costumed ‘re-enactors’ and of course live music with soloists and groups singing the nostalgic tunes of the wartime forties. Sylvia Williams of Vectis 40s Vintage said:
“Vectis 40s Vintage is very pleased that WAM is supporting and hosting our event. We are always pleased to be able to inform and entertain about the 1940s. This event helps us to raise money for our charities and is bringing people to the museum. “The musical element extended into the evening with a 1940s dance, with Key Tones, which was held in WAM’s ‘new Hangar Two’. There was even an ‘Ale Bar’, run by WAM Volunteer Hobbit, which incidentally had an ale named after him ‘Wobbly Hobbit.”
Helen Blake, chair person of WAM summed it up, saying:
“It was a great co-operation between WAM and Vectis 40s Vintage. A lot of hard work from the WAM Team and all the forties vintage participants resulted in a fabulous weekend for many visitors over the weekend.”
