An 18-year-old man is being questioned by Police on suspicion of stealing a car which he is alleged to have then crashed in Chale during the early hours of this morning (Friday).
It was reported to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary at just before 01:00 this morning that a green Fiat 500 had been stolen from an address in Cypress Road, Newport.
A short time later, the control room received reports that the vehicle had been involved in a road traffic collision in the rural village of Chale – some 7 miles away.
Officers responded to the scene and found a green Fiat 500 had collided with a stone wall on Town Lane.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that an 18-year-old male from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and drug driving.
He remains in custody at this time.
UPDATE@ 16:35 – Police say the 18-year-old has been released under investigation.
It has been confirmed that he was also arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A Fiat 500???????? Joking aside, these brainless wonders need making an example of. Taking cars now seems to be happening here, mores the pity…..but what part don’t these absolute cretins not get, that drink/drug driving is absolutely 100% NOT acceptable. They could kill innocent people. This crime must be given much tougher sentencing, to include jail time.
That wall could of been innocent people traveling and killed the lot ,the prat needs banning for life before the inevitable happens and leaves others people’s life in tatters through no fault of their own
It would have been less shameful to catch the bus, than steal a fiat 500 haha.
