A 14-year-old girl has been charged with attempted murder following an incident in Shanklin last month.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of attempting to kill a woman on the evening of 19th February.

Police were called to an address in the Shanklin area at 18:54 following reports of an assault.

It has been confirmed that a woman sustained a head injury during the incident and was taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged.

The unnamed teen was arrested and has subsequently been charged with attempted murder – an offence which carries a maximum term of life imprisonment with a starting point of 6 years in custody. She appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 23rd February and was remanded into youth detention.

Later this week the 14-year-old will appear at the Isle of Wight Youth Court, where the case is expected to be adjourned to the Crown Court.

Few details about the incident can be revealed at this stage due to the accused’s age and the ongoing court proceedings.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY – Following today’s appearance via video link, the girl has been remanded in a youth dentention centre to appear before the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 15th March.
