2 groups of youths were stopped and 7 teenagers searched by Police following reports of anti-social behaviour in Sandown at the weekend. Diligent members of the community reported anti-social behaviour around the derelict Ocean Hotel, Parkbury Hotel and Cygnet Hotel areas, with photographic evidence supplied to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. In total, 12 young people were dispersed from the town across Saturday and Sunday, with follow up work to now take place to help prevent such situations in the future. Police say that action will include the Anti-social Behaviour Pathway, referrals to youth version services and the consideration of prosecution.

A national service programme would be massively beneficial for our youth whether they are problematic or not. National service has demonstrably positive effects on educational and occupational development. It provides opportunities to learn skills, and is generally associated with improved health and well-being. By national service, I do not necessarily mean military service because there have been (and still are) many community-based forms of national service in other countries. However, I am not averse to compulsory military national service.

If Sandown wasn’t in such a state with SO many derelict, empty or downright scummy buildings, perhaps this wouldn’t be such an issue! Give teenagers something to do, keep them busy. There isn’t even a youth club anymore. It just gets worse and worse. Really is a sad state of affairs.

I can honestly say that I can only ever recall seeing one lot of teenagers causing any trouble on the Island, but I have noticed various mature adults causing problems & old soaks hanging about in the streets, intimidating people. Shouldn’t we be the ones setting a good example to the kids instead of blaming them?
I mean I’m all up for “everybody” afforded equal opportunities to serve as an officer but cant you be more specific on what kind of “stature” our Bobbies should be?
