The Net Zero Retrofit Training programme has got off to flying start at the new Forest Road Low Carbon Centre of Excellence, based at Sydenhams in Newport.
The programme invites unemployed people, aged 19 and above, to discover and learn new skills in a rapidly expanding industry, with the students supported in their learning by The Prince’s Trust and local community interest company, Future Isle of Wight.
The initial training takes 2 weeks, focusing on an understanding of retrofit and the impact this has in making homes and properties more energy efficient. The students graduate from their training with a Level 2 qualification in insulation and ventilation, CSCS card, a tablet (to help students to complete their training) and most importantly opportunities to use and develop their skills in the workplace.
Recent training graduate Morgan comments:
“I had a background in the building industry but didn’t really want to go down it. But this has changed my mind about everything really.” Another qualified student, Zack comments: “I’ve learned a lot, it’s been more interesting than I thought. I’m learning about all different types of jobs you can do in the industry, so not just on the construction side.”
Vince Ward, Founder and Director of Future Isle of Wight, is working with a range of contractors to connect training graduates into real jobs:
“I speak to contractors on a daily basis who are seeking people with the right skills, on the Isle of Wight, to improve properties here. We are delighted to help students every day to connect with contractors and start a new career.”
“The funding for the programme has been secured by national training provider Net Zero Training. Director Alan Wilson comments on the impact of the programme so far: “It is fantastic and inspiring to see young people given this new career opportunity, applying their skills and talents in ways which benefit the whole community.”
These courses are being run fortnightly through March and April. If you are unemployed and aged 19 or above and would like to know more, then visit https://netzero-training.com/iow.
