Residents and businesses in Yarmouth have expressed concerns about the seven-week closure of Bouldnor Road for geotechnical works by Island Roads, fearing it will result in further loss of business in the coastal town.
Several businesses are only just hanging on after the supposed end to the economic downturn and are struggling to stay afloat, something not lost on those near the harbour in Yarmouth.
Ron Donaldson, owner of Holdings Newsagents in Yarmouth and a local property owner has said today:
“Like for like as of last year’s figures we are 36% down, which is massive and unsustainable.”
Another local businessman told Island Echo:
“We know we are under pressure because of the weather and luckier than most, but that problem is likely to continue for weeks if not years, but this other pressure is a major problem for us, and one we are not seeing any help with”
Other businesses in the town report similar problems, with the towns three pubs looking at empty bars mostly during the lunchtime trading period with a reduce number of visitors heading to the town either to eat or drink.
A meeting with Island Roads has been set up in The Yarmouth Institute on Monday 11th February at 18:30. Residents are invited to attend.
