YACHT TOWED INTO DEEPER WATER BY YARMOUTH RNLI

Yarmouth RNLI launched to the aid of a 13m yacht in difficulty in the Western Solent this afternoon (Friday).

The Yarmouth All Weather Lifeboat was requested to launch by Solent Coastguard at 13:14 following a call for help from a yacht that had run aground on the treacherous Shingles Bank.

In bitterly cold conditions, but otherwise fine weather, the lifeboat sped to the aid of the stricken sailing yacht and her crew of 2, arriving on scene 1 nautical mile north of The Needles within just 14 minutes.

The lifeboat’s smaller Y-boat was immediately deployed and a tow line was passed to the casualty vessel in order to tow her into deeper water. Once clear of the bank, the yacht proceeded to Falmouth and the lifeboat crew recovered the Y-boat and returned to station, arriving back at 15:20.
