Work on the controversial Ryde Transport Interchange project is to enter a new phase next week.
On Monday, Island Roads crews who have been working on the new footway and cycleway adjacent the Esplanade Rose Garden will begin work to extend the cycle path to the area outside the Ryde Superbowl, meaning the temporary footway and traffic management will be extended.
By the end of the overall scheme, a new signposted cycle route will run the entire length of the Esplanade linking to the existing routes from Ladies Walk to the west and Puckpool to the east.
The cycleway work forms part of a wider project that will see a number of improvements including a new vehicular access to Ryde Pier, a reconfigured bus station as well as new street furniture and planting throughout the Esplanade area.
The project, financed in the main from Government grant, also involves the creation of new public spaces.
Work, which began in April, is currently progressing to schedule and is due to complete next Spring.
I drove along the Esplanade today. My goodness! Could they have made the temporary toilet block any uglier?. Absolutely horrendous!
Just in time for the start of the summer season
Gathering pace, oh good. Like just one working when I passed the site today at 1330hrs, and he was on his knees. What a total waste of public money and just when the tourist business is trying to get back into gear.
Congratulations IoW AND Ryde Town Council!
A ‘major’ re-developiment that NONE of the Locals as per your (SUPPOSED) consultation underlined agreed with!!
Welcome to the IoW in the fast approaching Holiday Season!
This was a so called ‘Improvement’ that none of the locals wanted, nor did it need doing!!!
That toilet block looks a right mess, I walked past all the so called ongoing works, and nobody was doing anything all the workers I saw were stood around talking,NO work taking place !!!!!
Can’t wait to see the finished result. Its got to be an improvement on the outdated ugly mess currently affronted us. The old toilets and cafe are desperately in need of improvement. No idea why people are so negative every time something new is suggested. The interchange in Portsmouth is superb. This will look amazing and I can’t wait to try the new cafe, lavatories and cycle track – at different times obvs
I notice the buses reverse out of their bays in the new interchange in Portsmouth. This was labelled dangerous by Phil Jordon when asked why the design could not be reconfigured
The lack of consultation ,choice of lay out and outright lies by those that are supposed to serve us is why people are upset
Reversing a bus is not dangerous – it is the stupidity of those walking behind a bus, with earphones in and glued to their phones, that don’t hear the audible alert of the bus getting ready to reverse.
People need to take personal responsibility for theirselves and stop expecting everyone else to do it for them.
The point I was making is that the new interchange in Portsmouth the buses reverse out of the bays. The interchange was built with money from the same pot as the Ryde interchange. When asked why the design could not be changed Phil Jordan stated the buses reversing out of bays are dangerous. So is the much larger interchange in Portsmouth dangerous or was Phil Jordan lying about the fact the the basic design/layout of the Ryde interchange could not be changed. The public could not choose any different layouts but choose a few benches and some slabs
Just at the start of the holiday season and how will it look when the tv cameras arrive in September for the cycle race?
so,they are turning the esplanade into a bus stop ,total waste,of money ,is southern vectis contributing anything, wight link,??
