A Wootton man who crashed a stolen car into a barrier on the dual carriageway last month took the vehicle because it was his ‘favourite car’, a court has heard. George Swain, 25, of Mary Rose Avenue in Wootton, appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court this afternoon (Tuesday) via video link from HMP Isle of Wight having previously admitted driving without insurance, driving with a licence, aggravated vehicle taking and dangerous driving as well as 2x assault a person occasioning actual bodily harm. Prosecuting, Liz Miller, told the court that between 07:30 and 11:00 on 10th April, Swain went to a premises on Lushington Hill in Wootton and stole a red Honda Civic Type-R. The vehicle in question was unlocked and had the keys inside, with the court told that it was planned by the owner that their partner would come and pick the vehicle up whilst they were at work. Having got into the drivers seat of the car and started the engine, Swain proceeded to drive into Newport making several runs up and down the dual carriageway. CCTV showed in court captured Swain – who was waiting at the lights at the top of the northbound carriageway – make a U-turn in the middle of the junction before colliding with a grass verge and a barrier. Then some minutes later having done a lap of the dual, despite the vehicle having sustained serious damage to the front end, Swain made a 2nd U-turn and proceeded down the dual carriageway towards Newport Town Centre where – just moments later – he crashed again after attempting to weave through the traffic.
Police and paramedics were rapidly on scene, quickly arresting Swain before taking him to the nearby St Mary’s Hospital. It was at the hospital that Swain told Police it was ‘his’ car. At today’s hearing, the court heard about a duo of assault occasioning actual bodily harm incidents committed by Swain at the hospital back on 3rd February. The court heard how Swain became angry at being told to stop vaping and that he became aggressive when confronted by staff, punching one of them in the face and trying to bite another whilst restrained on the floor. Defending the 25-year-old, Michael McGoldrick told the court that his client took the vehicle in question because it was his favourite car and he wanted to drive it. Magistrates deemed their sentencing powers insufficient and so the case was sent to the Isle of Wight Crown Court where Swain will next appear on 22nd May.

Hopefully after reading the article in full this absolute idiot and menace to society gets a really stiff sentence when he appears for sentencing. Obviously his previous encounters with the Law have had no effects on his behaviour so far ?? .. Please Judges don’t be lenient with this type of offender …LOCK Him up for a long time , before he ends up killing some innocent member of the public with his antics !!
How can he be defended ..nothing but a tatol low life piece of shit.. please put him in jail he’s worth nothing..but they won’t..and he attacked people ..
I will remember that excuse next time I visit curry’s and steal a TV it’s my favourite TV
Can we send him to Rwanda?
Ye that’s working well it’s costing us £1.8 MILLION per goon..that worked well …
Exactly, let them work then costs us nothing. £1.8million is ridiculous. As I’ve said before these people have risked their lives with so many threats, they may of very exploited, beaten and travelled for years to get a better life ,our British scum just take and steal and benefit fraud, most can’t even get up to get to DSS appointment if before noon. Criminals with long offending and prison should be sent to Rawanda, give some boat people a chance!. And save tax payers money.
Yep.
The Gammonistas bleat (or is it grunt) about how much the migrants cost to house and feed.
I say let them work. If they work hard, let them stay and export a British scumbag in their stead.
Left the keys inside, really?
What a feeble excuse.
My favourite car is a Rolls Royce, if I can’t afford one
I would not steal one.
At least you are showing some ambition and discernment. This knuckle dragger is tucked up in his cell dreaming of a Honda Civic.
Needs long prison sentence before kills someone, also needs to pay for car he stole – however many year’s it takes as poor owner probably won’t get insurance. All this is tip of iceberg compared to what else been upto.
He didn’t steal it…his partner left the keys in it deliberately so he could drive it away and she could claim it was stolen. Backfired big time because the pair are as thick as shit… Car’s a write off and no way to get it fixed as her insurance will be voided.
I didn’t get the impression that Swin was the ‘partner’ in the story from reading this. Maybe an acquaintance of the couple who owned the car, aware of the arrangement?
Totally wrong on all counts mate.
You have no idea why or even where the keys were in this car when the owner left it have you? Have you ever taken a car to a garage? The keys can be left for a short period to keep the engine running. Would you class that as deliberate?
This was not a silly mistake, this was STOLEN from a workplace by a total waste of space. The owner and family are devastated.
How can you call someone thick when you haven’t even read the article properly? It says that the owner left the keys in there for their partner to pick up while they were at work. Nowhere does it say that his partner was the owner and left the keys in it for him to steal.
Just get rid of people like that, obviously no good for society and a big ol’ waste of oxygen.
Well I hope he gets the bill for all the damage and the write off. It won’t be his favourite car after that lot.
What an absolute rubbish excuse for being a thief.
His defence if you can call it that WILL get him off With next to nothing ..because he has nothing and is nothing..
Well… his partner isn’t going to get that fixed as the insurance will be void. Tough sh** stupid woman. She should get done for conspiracy… maybe look for a new partner as the existing one will be away for a long time, with any luck
You’re so confidently wrong
He was clearly having an episode, but yes let’s all just comment on his entire life like classic keyboard warriors..
Shouldn’t be out in public on his own to begin with then
Which ‘episode’ are you referring to- assault x2, or theft, endangering many lives on the busiest road on the IW?? There is NO defence or mitigating circumstances for any of this!
People on the Island have more episodes than Coronation Street
Shame he didn’t do a front ender with a skip lorry Why is there so much B/S to go through to get a comment posted verificating pistures that are a job to even see?
If wanting to drive his favourite car was his only defence there is no hope. Euthanasia is the only hope then he won’t reoffend!?
Hopefully George has a favourite Prison as well .. and gets plenty of time there to enjoy it ..
A ban for life is the answer
Despite working hard I could not afford my favourite car so I never got to drive it. Should have worked harder I suppose. How stupid when I apparently could have just taken someone else’s if they were stupid enough to leave their keys in the car. I wonder if their insurance will pay up?
