The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has been mobilised to an incident in Alverstone this afternoon (Friday), where an elderly lady has crashed into a river.
Fire appliances from Ryde, Sandown and Newport have been called to Alverstone Road where it is said a woman has fallen into the Eastern Yar river.
The Rescue Tender and Water Rescue Unit from Newport has also been sent to the incident along with a fire officer.
The woman has been freed from her predicament and is being attended to by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.
The road has been blocked by the fire appliances attending an address between Youngwoods Way and Lower Road.
The cycle path remains open.

So she crashed into the river? I hate it when a river just jumps out in front or me. Pesky rivers!
That is really so funny? LOL!!! ??? Why?
If an elderly (and by that could mean as old as someone nearing sixty) or young person ends up being in a river cold shivering and clearly disabled – chances of survival lessen for that particular group! So not just about old and doddery, who must be more frightened as their reflexes are slower. Whoever she is and it isn’t always their fault, She MUST HAVE BEEN VERY frightened for her life, regardless…and probably injured too, or exacerbated her pain levels. So PLEASE everyone, think before you laugh, emos aplenty on social media, coz you all think it is sooooooooooooooo funny! This could have been tragic, and may still have ongoing consequences/repercussion health-wise.
Imploring you all to be kind to one another, and stop having a laugh at everyone else’s problems ( and clearly MANY are making mistakes at the moment – look at Bournemouth – not many mobility- disabled – scooters apparently there – or did I miss them? Not many disabled folk either!) We are going through such dire times enough without the lack of humanity. Just thankful, that she appears to have been rescued without serious injury. Thanks to the fire brigade, ambulance services . Hoping that she is well , and sending my best wishes to her.

Richard, agree, this is obviously a disabled lady ( who needs a mobility scooter – and must have been (or could have been so frightening and hugely life threatening situation for her – it isn’t always about the driving. Forget all the negative comments

How much, I wonder, did this shout cost the taxpayer.
The area involves very narrow lanes ( I know I live on one) – therefore they had to come from both sides, as the first vehicles would have blocked – the demands of the situation obviously necessitated the need to have more assistance – BUT HEY let us be thankful that a life was being saved!!!! Someone who accidently ended up in a river – was SAVED! OMG HEADLINE NEWS! (what a travesty to the tax payer) when many ignorant drunk people on beaches – usually at the younger end of the age range….need to get coast guards/helicoptors/police and ambulance services out for them getting tipsy on a beach at Sandown or Shanklin….won’t mention Bournemouth again. Poor little old lady accidently falling into a river on her mobility scooter – is now costing MORE to the taxpayer! Hahaha?! funniest thing I have read all week – truly! 🙂
Poor old thing, but…. Strange that people with restricted ability to operate their own bodies are then given motorised invalid carriages to tear up the pavements and country lanes like boy racers on a beano. I am not saying that the lady involved in this situation was so doing, but many do thus spoiling it for the innocent special cases who have no backup in time of global pandemic, when they should clearly be indoors and not cluttering the Queen’s highway with extra traffic. For which no exam is necessary, by the way. My coachman is getting on a bit and I have forbade him to operate one of those light blue glass-fibre three wheelers… If he ain’t fit enough to get out the Rolls he ought not to be wasting the country’s money roaming around in state sponsored ‘special little cars’, just so he can feel independent. Ruddy liability, if you ask me. There ought to be a law….
Don’t be so patronising! The motorised scooters – not cars – you refer to,
are limited to NORMAL walking pace….if you are going to make a statement get the facts right. EVEN the road ones are not able to do more than running pace! DOH! THEY definitely are not able to tear up pavements or country lanes ( that they LIVE ON so are legally entitled to ‘walk’ by another means, upon by the only way they can- or would you prefer to see all elderly and disabled people confined forever into a permanent lockdown?- as in the really olden days) locked away. What a VERY selfish view! Guessing you are joking or trolling of course?
You are of course entitled in a democratic society, to view your opinions, – but reference to clearly ‘special little fibre made cars ???- certainly giving your age away – long gone!
Gone are the days when either the disabled or elderly are expected to be confined to their homes – the mobility scooter offers the only opportunity for many to still live a life, that I would have thought that the lockdown experience would have provided a little more understanding of! Clearly not! This is how we (and I am not elderly) have to exist, without these mobility scooters, we would have exactly the same lives, the rest of the country’ world have experienced in lockdown that has proven so impossible for many but which I am personally still experiencing. So please think, about what you are writing…
To all reading this, PLEASE be kind to everyone, think of everyone’s situation, and keep safe.
Some of these things weigh a ton and if they hit you at running speed you’d know about it, so best you get your facts straight, they do tear up the pavements and cause a nuisance on the roads! Seems like everyone has one these days, more like benidorm with all these lazy people on them! But if you need to to get about, just drive safely and think of pedestrians when bombing up the pavements.

Actually, in all seriousness, I’ve nearly be knocked over by one of these when they came barrelling around a corner, on the payment. There’s a well known gentleman who has his ‘fine steed’ number plated and uses it on the roads, causing all kinds of congestion for traffic following him at 10mph up Hallets Shute, or the long climb up the hill before dropping down into Freshwater Bay. Or, the lady in Morrison Supermarket who charges around the Isles, expecting everyone to get out of her way because she’s ‘clearly disabled’ ! Some of these scooters are big, heavy machines and could do a pedestrian a lot of damage, even at the low speeds they travel at. There have been many reports of elderly-mobility-scooterist who’ve ended up driving up duel carriageways and motorways the wrong way. The dear old souls should be tested and insured just the same as all of us. They’re a liability! I hope the lady in this incident is OK.
