In a fantastic performance at this year’s London Marathon, Will Newnham has broken the Ryde Harriers club record with an impressive time of 2hrs 26 mins 51 secs.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, with driving rain throughout the race, Newnham showed great determination to finish with such a strong time in 59th place out of 40,000 participants.
Newnham – a retained firefighter at Ryde – started the race strongly, settling into a large group of runners and racing through the halfway mark in an incredibly fast time of 71 minutes. As the race progressed, signs of fatigue began to show from the 21-mile mark onwards. However, Newnham dug deep and displayed great grit to hold on to a brilliant time and secure the Ryde Harriers club record.
Will expressed gratitude to his sponsors, Ryde Masonic Lodge, JF Performance and Stubbings Bros, for their support in helping him achieve his goals. He also thanked his coach, Geoff Watkin, for his support and experience with marathon training.
Newnham’s next target is the Island Games Half Marathon, which will take place in Guernsey in July. With his exceptional performance at the London Marathon, he is looking to continue his success with a strong performance representing the Isle of Wight.
