The Wildheart Trust has announced, with sadness, the loss of the sanctuary’s tigress, Antonella.
Originally rescued from a circus, Antonella arrived at the sanctuary in June 2018 with her friends Zoppa and Natasha.
Antonella was 17-years-old, which is a great age to reach, especially following the trauma she suffered in her earlier life.
A spokesperson for the sanctuary has said:
“Very few words do justice to Antonella, she was a phenomenal Tiger, such beauty, such strength and unrivalled intelligence. A huge loss for us all.
“We take comfort in the fact she enjoyed a life of luxury during her years with us and we are honoured to have been given the time we had to get to know such an amazing animal”.

Sad story, but Sandown Zoo (I will call it that because it is a zoo) A cage is still a cage no matter where it is.
So would you have preferred Antonella was not rescued from her grim life at the circus? She was RESCUED and of course not able to be released in the wild. Are you that silly?
I hear they have a few rescued trolls there too. Perhaps you could join them.
This big cat had more intelligence than you, you really are a sad individual.
Oh, the village idiot has escaped from his home (cage) again.
Whats wrong with a zoo so long as the enclosures give the animals space? Zoos teach youngsters about wildlife and encourage them to look after it. TV programs are marvelous but there is nothing like seeing the animals in real life. Not everyone can go to the jungle.
A tiger or any other big cat born in captivity can never be released into the wild. At least these poor animals were rescued from a bad life from a circus in Spain, bought to the island where they had grass under their paws, they were free to roam within a secure area, fed daily and given medical treatment if required.
Much better don’t you think.
The word Zoo is short for Zoological garden not cage
So sad to hearvof the
So sad to hear of the loss of lovely Antonella but at least she had a happy 4 years with yourselves & her friends.
