Plans for a third vehicle ferry service on the Isle of Wight seem to have vanished.
The idea of a new community ferry service operating on the Island was first made public in October last year.
The Isle of Wight Council was asked to back ‘in principle’ the proposed route and was originally set to find out more and debate the issue at a cabinet meeting in November.
Since then, however, the item has been pushed back further and further until it now no longer appears on the latest version of the authority’s forward plan, which was published on Wednesday.
The council’s website does suggest the item will come back before the authority in June.
Speaking about the community ferry service, an Isle of Wight Council spokesperson said previous discussions with the project promoters had not yet reached a position where a formal position by the council was being sought.
The council was being asked to consider providing a letter of support to the Island-based consortium proposing the development of the service.
Back in October, it was said the consortium would be consulting the public and key agencies about the principle of the proposal. A public consultation has not yet been announced.
Because it wasn’t well thought out – who’s got the money to buy boats and develop new landing ports – can’t use existing as all owned by the existing ferry operators except Yarmouth.
Great idea in principle but who has that sort of money is these times???
Tunnel is the answer, wont need to rely on a ferry then, get up and go when you please
You paying for it???
There are plenty of companies that will invest, just like the Channel Tunnel P&O ferries said it will never happend and was impossible ?
No way.
If we have a tunnel or a bridge, there will have to be alot of changes on the island. Expect lots of ‘low life’ popping over for a days plundering of unlocked homes/vehicles, groups of caravans parking up in unlocked fields & taking up residence wherever they chose. Be careful what you wish for..
Lovely Dream but never going to happen.
Thats what P&O ferries said
Before or after they forgot to shut the doors?
Yes, it was supposed to an environmentally friendly service powered by hot air!
Wish they would stop the robbing ferries.. build a tunnel and have done with it.. Fed up with paying extortionist prices just to go 4 or 5 miles.. plus having to book in advance, just to get across the Solent… About time they abolished the money grabbing ferry companies.. always thought ‘ money grabbing ‘ was illegal. Unknown why the Government has not stepped in and forced a set price for anytime crossings..
no doubt the ferry companys will try to block any other consortium to musle in on there business ,througfh fear of bing out priced and are afraid of the manopoly the ferrys have, Wightlink or Red funnel are afraid of competition these ferrys prices are overpriced ,when there is another ferry company you will then get a price war ,that will be the time when the ferry companies will reduce the cost of the ferry .
Another vehicle ferry operator has always been a complete non-starter as there’s no suitable terminal on the Island for it to operate from and nowhere suitable to build one. I can’t understand why people are even talking about this.
Levelling up for IoW not until a fixed link is built
