40 swimmers joined Wessex Cancer Support to bravely swim 1.3 miles from Hurst Castle on the mainland to Colwell Bay on Saturday (9th September).
Wessex Cancer Support coordinates this annual event along with dedicated volunteer, Michelle Salsbury, who came up with the concept.
Michelle said:
“When I approached Wessex with my idea back in 2021 for a Solent swim, I never imagined it to be this successful, or raise as much as it has.
“I’m grateful to all those that volunteer, including my poor friends that have their arms twisted. The event couldn’t happen without them.”
Freshwater Lifeboat, along with 26 kayakers and 6 support boats, ensured the safety of all swimmers as they traversed the Solent. Glanvilles Damant Legal Services sponsored the event and attended to distribute medals.
The Needles Pleasure Cruise also contributed time and resources to getting swimmers to the starting point on the day.
Laura Haytack, Wessex Cancer Support’s Regional Fundraising Manager, said:
“I am in absolute awe of our brave swimmers who not only completed the cross-Solent swim but have raised a phenomenal amount for Islanders affected by cancer.”
Over £50,000 has already been raised, and as swimmers continue to collect donations, this amount is expected to rise.
Wessex Cancer Support will be looking to release spaces for next year’s Swim for Hope in the next couple of weeks.
Next year’s swim is due to take place on Sunday 30th June 2024.
