Isle of Wight residents have been having their say on local waste and recycling services, with the Council thanking those who took the time to respond to a recent survey. More than 600 responses were received by the Isle of Wight Council during December and January. Whilst this is an increase on the previous survey, it represents just 0.42% of the Island’s population. The annual customer satisfaction questionnaire asked for views on services currently provided and any ideas on how the Island can recycle more and reduce its waste. Among the survey’s findings were:
- 80.6% of residents are satisfied with the service at the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) — up from 79.8% the year before;
- There is a big increase in satisfaction regarding the booking system at the HWRCs at 75.4%, up from 64.1% previously;
- 79% of respondents are satisfied with the food waste service;
- Just 15% of respondents do not recycle food waste, a decrease on last year (16.9%).
The council is responsible for the collection, treatment, recycling and disposal of household recyclables and waste on the Island. This is delivered through a contract with its waste provider. Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Cabinet lead for climate change, biosphere and waste, said:
“Thank you to all the residents who took the time to complete the waste survey. Your opinion really matters to us. “Your feedback helps make sure we provide the best service we can with our waste providers. I would also like to echo some of the residents’ comments and thank the collection crew and the HWRC staff. They are out in all weathers, making sure our waste services run smoothly.”
Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, added:
“I’d also like to thank residents for their feedback and support, not just in this survey but all year round. Your efforts to recycle more and reduce waste really make a difference. “Your feedback is essential to help us understand where we can make improvements and what is already working well. We will continue to work with our waste service providers to make sure we are always listening.”

I’ve given up separating paper and other recycling waste. No-one in our stretch of the street does. In the last 18 months I have had to replace the black insert for the green recycling bin four times. because the bins are not checked before being emptied.
The binmen make more of a mess once they have been to collect the
Rubbish.
They should be done for Flytipping.
Well you should do. Its our responsibility to protect the planet. I have never had to replace the black insert in my bin. In fact when it deteriorated I was given a replacement without even asking for one.
The worlds Elite do not give a Fcuk about the climate, why should we!
They fly here there and everywhere, even Grant Shapps had an
Helicopter pick him up from his home 3 times in 1 week
Doing his bit for the climate
Lol
I have lost the small bin once. I now always put it alongside the recycling bin for emptying. But it is a moot point. The binmen empty the cardboard into the big bin and then chuck the lot into the lorry.
What a load of rubbish
I pay £2,000.00 a year council tax, let the Numpty’s collecting the
Rubbish do the recycling.
I don’t go in a Fish and Chip shop and fry my own Fish and Chips.
Or you could think of the bigger picture and help… Some might say it’s just selfish.
Anything that dosnt fit in my black bin gets chucked in the green one, hey presto they dump that in the truck never had any issues. So yeah I’m well happy with the service
If the IW Council want higher satisfaction figures – 75.4% still means nearly 25% – a quarter – not satisfied – then they need to listen to the 25%. Have some times when you don’t need to book?
Make garden waste collection affordable etc etc
Don’t forget 99% didn’t even bother to complete survey as most are not satisfied but not interested as more important things in life. Most I know just put majority in black bags in main bin . Don’t understand why we pay highest council tax for waste collection,yet we are asked to sort own recycling, maybe with cut backs we will have to chuck it in refuse truck soon!. All a con. Council should be running service,not outsourcing to a profit making company,so many Council staff sat around just sending emails and arranging meetings with each other,get out of county hall and do some work.
I saw Bob Seely on Politics Live a couple of months go stating that the Isle of Wight recycles 100% of our waste.
Dear Isle of Wight council due to you making me pay £2000 a year for your disgusting service, I have never and never will separate my waste. You guys take the Micky and the only difference in my house is the colour of my bin that goes out weekly, I just fill that bin up with anything including garden waste, dog poo bags and recycling. I hope it ruins the system and makes your life’s difficult, stop taking the Micky and lower my council tax and I may start doing the bins correctly and as for the stupid stickers you sent they went in the black bin !!!
Are you proud enough to supply your name and address to the council? Or just proud to state your comment behind a false name?
The Council should give households Council tax
reductions to encourage recycling.
You can’t tell me the benefit bums who don’t pay
Council tax etc, recycle, only the paying public do
(Those who don’t have brains)
I honestly did not realise how many selfish short sighted people there are on the Island…
The short sighted people are the sheep who do what they are told!
If someone said put your head in an oven, would you!
Many people would.
The whole world knows the climate farce is a scam, even
King Chaz is ditching his EV, it was on National news
Ignoring the climate side of things, surely recycling is to prevent huge amounts of waste going to landfill and help reduce things like plastic from getting into our oceans and food chain.
Ford in America have already stopped producing electric vehicles and China and Japan will soon be doing the same as they know these vehicles will be obsolete in ten years time. Japan are concentrating on producing hydrogen engined vehicles instead.
Can’t be bothered to recycle? You must be the same type of person that dumps their empty take-away rubbish out of their car window.
Another made up survey.like we’d all say those things right
Every two weeks I set out my recycling bin alongside a small bin containing cardboard and paper, Every two weeks the binmen empty the bin of cardboard into the recycling bin and empty the lot into the lorry. What point, then, is there in a separate bin for cardboard?
The same Lorry takes all the rubbish.
It is just getting people educated for the future.
A recycling plant should be able to sort through all the waste, it should not
be up to the people to do.
Many of us are already doing work of others when we do self service in shops
What next!
