Swimmers are once again being advised not to swim in the sea following sewage discharges at a number of Isle of Wight beaches following recent heavy rain.
DEFRA and the Environment Agency have today (Thursday) said that bathing is not advised at Bembridge, St Helens, Seagrove Bay, Ryde, Cowes, Gurnard or Yarmouth following confirmed discharges in the past 24 hours. Unverified discharges have also taken place at Colwell, Whitecliff, Yaverland, Sandown and Shanklin.
It comes in the same week that a banner was erected on the fence of Southern Water’s water supply works at Golf Links Road in Sandown stating “stop dumping shit in the sea” – despite the site itself handling fresh water.
However, Southern Water has said that the discharges into the sea are heavily diluted and are around 95% rainwater.
A spokesperson has recently said:
“Extreme rain can overwhelm the combined sewer and drainage system which exists in many parts of our region.
“To protect homes, schools and businesses from flooding has led to some overflows releasing excess water into the sea”.

What a Croc of $h£t. Sort it out southern water, its the 21st century for gods sake. Should be none at all going in the sea.
It should be pumped into county hall.
If this was France we would be dumping the shit on those two ieffective lumps of sewerage that want to be Prime Minister. Who dumped that shit on us and who will pay for it.? No prizes for guessing that answe
sharon all they want to do is repair leakage pipes instead of renewing ALL THE INFERSTRUTURE and pay themselve and the shareholders heavy dividends, i have had many arguments with southern water its about time this govberment got of their backsides and fine the water companies heavily for dumping raw sewage into our beaches .the rain water should NOT go into the seas but a catchment area to preserve our water supply
What a croc of $h!t… Come on southern water it’s the 21st century, nothing should be going in the sea at all!
I’m not sure Southern water are aware of the damage they are causing. They just keep letting it happen and paying the fine which disappears instead of fixing the problem!
Please remind why I pay southern water to get rid of my sewage (I might as well just dump it in the street).
Chris Southern water Charge costomers charge more for treating raw sewage than you recieve water check your bill
These Warter companies should be heavily find and the money should be spent on improving the infrastructure, instead of going to shareholders….more shit will be along soon…
Where do people think they are going to store it then?. If people didn’t put so much down drain might help, less showering, less flushing ( never used to flush everytime you had a wee, specially large families). New buildings all put rain water down drains too. Like people complain about the dump smelling in summer – it’s your waste!.
More people equals more poo
As the UK allows or does little to return the endless stream of new bottoms arriving daily then each will add to the problem.
Kindness comes with a huge price tag in many diverse ways
Life gets better everyday under the Tories. Illegal immigration never been higher, shit in the sea never been higher, crime getting worse. Good times.
I agree. To really mess the country up, you can rely on a Tory. Always been the way.
People might not like it but it’s true. The NHS is in a state again due to Dr’s and nurses leaving in numbers, our Police force is very, very slowly recovering from having been cut by 20,000 officers, no thanks to ex PM Theresa May. Illegal immigrants arriving in 1000s. The main reason why people voted for Brexit was so we could make our own rules and stop the ever increasing numbers flooding the UK.
So many new homes, so many more people, so much more sewage and waste water.
The system can’t cope. It needs serious amounts of money to upgrade the antiquated facilities we currently have.
Did you, seriously believe the garbage Johnson and Farage spouted about Brexit allowing us to control illegal migration?
All that Brexit did was make it impossible to send them back to the country where they entered the EU. Before we fully left the EU in 2020, most migrants were sent back under the terms of the Dublin Regulation. We lost that in 2020 when the transition period ended.
But, but, but “Taking Back Control”!!!
Your personal higene must be absolutely disgusting, and who wants to sit on the loo when it’s full of shit from another person???…You?.I take that as a yes..
I’m pretty sure he said not to flush everytime people had a wee not shit.
that’s part of the service that we pay for, and pay a LOT for. No excuse for it with the amount of money they make. I’ve seen some of their pumping stations and they are from the Arc. It’s a joke.
If you don’t like it getting pumped into the sea, don’t go to toilet then!
your obviously full of shit lool
What a ridiculous comment to make. You try and stop your body from getting rid of what you’ve ingested, either solids or liquids.
Fool.
Surely we should put a stop to new house building until we stop having to dump sewage into the ocean.
The problem is that unlike many other countries the same system is used to process rainwater/storm runoff and sewage. Many countries have separate systems for that. If separate, heavy storms/rain result in runoff of rainwater only. If the sewage system is not overwhelmed by rainwater then no illegal and immoral discharge is needed.
The water companies have systematically failed to plan ahead, prepare or sufficiently invest in an infrastructure that can deal with heavy rain. Storms and heavy rain over short periods are going to become more and more likely.
Unless they deal with it, you might as well drop a giant loo blue in the solent.
How about actually cleaning the drains once in a century so that rain water can actually drain away. The drains on East Cowes seafront are always blocked, which is why the road floods. If the drains were cleared, the water would simply drain into the sea.
Read Pip’s post. Rain water and sewage waste go through the same system. So when it rains the sewage plants get overwhelmed, hence the need to release into the sea but all the sewage unfortunately goes out with it. Nothing to do with blocked drains. That would be an easy fix wouldn’t it?
If you can be bothered to use your eyes, go and have a look at the kerbs on East Cowes seafront. They have holes in them with pipes through the sea wall to drain rainwater. The pipes are all blocked by rubbish and have been for years, which is why the road always floods. Only some rainwater goes into the sewer system, not all.
Totally agree with you Sharon, well said
The Environment Agency regulations state: “You may not be able to comply with your permit if you cannot get the chemicals you use to treat the effluent you discharge because of the UK’s new relationship with the EU.” That is, Brexit and the supply chain issues it brings. Speaking on LBC, Stanley Johnson, Boris’s dad, said Britain was known as the “dirty man of Europe” before joining the EU. He said European regulations, which he was involved in writing, had transformed the quality of bathing water around the whole of Europe, adding the UK “really did get a cleanup”. Without the EU oversight forcing higher standards this is what you get.
Perhaps you would be happier moving to an EU country then?
Still here? Thought so and always will be.
Brexit took away the right for UK citizens to live and work in EU countries.
So you are stuck with us remainers pointing out how dumb and gullible you were.
And always will be.
I agree, European legislation forced an improvement of water quality on the U.K. so who is going to improve it further now?
Explain the unsanitary conditions of Greece then.
Nothing like resorting to a spot of lame whataboutery when you have lost an argument, is there?
I haven’t lost anything. I am just more enlightened than you idiot remoaners who want to see our country overrun by leeching immigrants and ruled by unelected Eurocrats.
Except, per capita, EU citizens working in the UK paid more tax than the UK average and leaving the EU has actually made illegal migration from non EU countries far worse.
But you continue living in your Brexity fantasy world of “sunlit uplands” if it makes you happy.
Instead of paying huge amounts of money to their share holders and giving themselves, the executives, huge bonuses, they need to start spending some serious amounts of money in updating the infrastructure.
We know it and they know it. Dumping sh*t in our seas and rivers should be made illegal. The new PM should make this along with the energy price crisis a priority. It’s killing wildlife and it’s just damn right disgusting.
Build more sewage plants to cope with the waste from all the new homes that are being built. Boris said build, build, build but no mention of the waste facilities not being able to cope! Typical.
Obviously too many people with money who want to pay even more to Southern Water, water discharge happens all round UK. Would Soon be complaints if they wanted to build a sewage storage pond/lake and then the smell. We don’t want them to use chemicals to break it down either , – so ,? What goes into the sea might not be nice but does not cause problems for environment. Ever wondered what happens on huge cruise ships with waste.
Are Southern Water not aware of weather forecasts, had the Council not sold off the reservoirs on the Island we wouldn’t be in a water ban situation. The excuse of emptying foul water into the sea due to heavy rainfall is not acceptable. What are they going to do come May next year when the April Showers have fallen heavily in that month for the past two years. The seasons are changing but SW is still stuck in the past, as is the Council – more concerned with profit rather than investment. Wake up climate change is only going to get worse.
Perhaps someone should request SW justify the charges for waste water, they are extortionate for the service being offered, especially when it rains. Bad enough that we are metered – would love a meter on waste water as this includes rain that escapes into the drainage system. Most of my water from sheds etc goes into massive water butts, and clean sink water into a bucket for use on garden.
What a disgrace, it’s 2022
F.F.S
Stop polluting the sea
CEO bonuses of millions , it is a common theme now, all the privatised or stolen companies get CEOs with big bonuses and they give a shoddy service, but at least more females are amongst the negligent CEOs now .Getting paid sh*t loads for dumping sh*t lol.
The Brexit referendum proves that nasty xenerphobic people are now the majority in this country.
They have always been here, but Brexit and, in particular, far right politicians gaining power have emboldened them.
