A yellow weather warning for freezing fog has once again been issued by IW Met Service, warning residents across the Isle of Wight of a cold and hazardous night ahead.
Areas of fog will develop rather quickly as the day goes on and throughout this evening (Saturday) these will become freezing and widespread leading to very poor visibility locally along with significant icy deposits where the fog is at its thickest.
Temperatures are expected to fall to as low as -6c in places overnight.
Icy stretches are likely to develop on untreated roads and surfaces, which could prove hazardous for motorists.
Island Roads have confirmed that gritters will be deployed from 21:00. They will be treating the regular network route as well as bridge decks at Stag Lane and Foxes Road.
Jamie Russel, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, says:
“Please take extra time when travelling as this type of fog and ice can be very localised. This means that some areas may be clear and then seconds later you are travelling through dense fog with ice on the road.
“Our ice maps are available to view here – www.iwmetservice.co.uk/iceandfrost“.
The warning is in force from 17:00 tonight (9th January 2021) until 13:00 on Sunday afternoon.
UPDATE SUNDAY @ 16:50 – The yellow weather warning has been extended.
IW Met Service say patchy low cloud and fog will thicken again as we move through this evening and will become widespread for a time.
Localised areas of freezing fog in more elevated locations will lead to the continued risk of ice, although this risk is somewhat lessened elsewhere as the temperatures are likely to remain just above freezing.

What a surprise its going to be cold and icey in January
It’s the brain dead drivers that worry me, watch this space…
It is of a surprise to those dim witted fools believing the ‘global warming’ story, which, has now been ‘changed’ to climate ‘change’ to then cover ‘normal’ unpredictable weather behaviour, as is proven in the fact of fossil strata sequences massive ‘change’ before humans ever walked this planet.
Yet because now, humans are ‘uncomfortable’ with anything they can’t ‘control’ they have to be made to ‘feel’ that by walking or cycling to work, or turning a light off, or getting their child to drop a drinking straw into a ‘re-cycle’ bin that they and their brainwashed clones are ‘saving the planet’ whilst the rest of us use more energy heating vast houses, driving huge cars, and watching our children live life to the max on jet skis, speed boats, and when allowed flying around the globe, whilst ‘they’ shuffle about in semi darkness, and are frozen to their cycle saddle, all for nothing.
What a fool believes.
we are entered a grand solar minimum in 2008 and the heat lag is about 10 years – global temp will likely drop by about 1 degree overall. This is likely to last until 2053 and we are seeing the effects now.
we should be looking at colder winters and colder summers for some time – and what do we have now – much colder this winter.
some humans are so full of their own self importance, that they fail to realise that the sun will cool this planet far quicker and that other things are in control of global conditions – we are merely occupants at the planets discretion.
as the sun reduces its power naturally, as it normally does – we get cold, very quickly and ice forms everywhere.
the surface of this planet will cool during this period.
report from a news agency last date 8th jan..
Maritime administrations around Bohai Bay issued temporary shipping bans on Wednesday following strong wind and the expansion of sea ice to 40 sea miles from 10 sea miles in late December. The ice is expected to reach an alarming level of 60 sea miles in mid-January.
Experts from China’s natural resources ministry warned that sea ice would affect fishing, offshore oil and gas production and port operation in Bohai and Yellow Sea regions although the country’s biggest offshore oil and gas producer CNOOC Ltd, said its Bohai operations were normal.
Qinhuangdao port, one of the largest coal transporting hubs, recorded the biggest number of vessels waiting in anchorage on Thursday since September 2018 due to the harsh weather. The port did not immediately reply to a Reuters request for comment.
I would like to know what melted the ice during the last ice age??
We humans didn’t exist, so the planet has always done its thing, with or without humans.
Has anyone an answer? Without an angry response please, it’s a genuine question..
the ice age began due to earths orbital tilt changes and the northern hemisphere getting little sun on it – chances are that the ice age ended because the orbital tilt changed and began heating up the northern hemisphere again.
space is brutally cold – eg the dark side of the moon has a temp of minus 170 degrees c.
one thing to note – CO2 levels increasing usually precede temperature increases, which melts the ice, although the reverse seems to be true in antartica.
There is a wealth of info online about this, some good, some speculation – worth a lockdown read!!
Well said .
The reason for the development and subsequent ice ages, like the the last one which was 12,000 years ago, are caused by the tilt angle of the Earth’s axis. New (March 2020) University of Melbourne research revealed that ice ages over the last million years ended when due to changes in the geometry of Earth’s orbit are responsible for the coming and going of ice ages.
i see your post got through cenwulf – mine about ice ages is still waiting for approval
So can we humans control the behaviour of the tilt and orbit of the planet??.
If not, will the planet continue warming up, and are humans responsible for the behaviour of the tilt and earths orbit??..
“Are humans responsible for the behaviour of the tilt and Earths orbit” wow!!! I mean – just WOW!
I simply asked a question, it would seem it’s a question that some people can’t understand.
No wonder the green party can’t get many votes, and the climate change protesters have gone quiet..
truth simple is probably the most apt word you have used.
Even the most intellectually challenged individual would know that human beings could not even begin to have any control or responsibility for the orbit of the earth around the sun
i mean, come on FFS
That’s why I asked the question, in other words we can’t control global warming, think about it…
Gosh
Wow, let’s just take heed of the weather warning & be extra careful if we have to drive. We’ve got more immediate worries with Covid 19 right now. Later on we can continue with problems caused by climate change.
Poor woowoo, I didn’t mean to confuse you, however I will take care on the road and respect other drivers.
I will also respect the Covid rules, and protect our NHS..
You are right, we do have other problems to deal with, keep safe..
Winter is coming
Stay alert
Control the frost
Save lives
It’s already —10 out there already
Not on the Island it isn’t. You must be in Spain!
According to my weather forecast it’s no lower than 5 degrees overnight tonight, Sunday! Hope it’s right I’m fed up with frosty icy mornings when you have to get to work.
