A war between the leading supermarkets has resulted in the price of fuel being slashed on the Isle of Wight, with Tesco knocking 6p/litre off the price of diesel this week alone.
Tesco on Brading Road has been selling petrol at 189.9p p/l and diesel at 197.9p p/l since June, dropping just 1p in that time. Now, the supermarket giant is selling petrol at 173.9p p/l and diesel at 190.9 p/l after rivals Asda cut their forecourt price to the same.
Many motorists feel that supermarkets have been taking the Michael for too long, with independent garages such as Harwoods in Wootton (which we all know tend to cost more than a supermarket) coming in at a whopping 3p/litre cheaper than Tesco in the past couple of weeks. Their diesel has been selling at 193.9p p/l, down from 208.9p p/l in June.
The past 4 months have been tough for motorists with both petrol and diesel costing almost an arm and a leg. It all began back in March when the Texaco Garage in Osborne priced its petrol at 177p p/l and its diesel at 201.7p p/l. There was outrage, but it is now a reality for the whole of the Island – but after 4 months things finally seem to be getting better.
Sadly, there are no signs of things going back to how they were in May 2020 when fuel prices were at their lowest point since 2016. The average price of petrol was just 107.6p p/l and diesel at 114.6 p/l.
Brent crude is now coming in at $99 a barrel which is around $29 a barrel – or 22% – cheaper than it was 6 weeks ago.

Harwoods still cheapest
You just have to love the island.
Low average wage, higher than average prices on everything.
People power is everyone going on strike, dont drive, dont go to work for one week, only buy essentials.
We, the little ordinary person have great power, if only we could all come together.
That is why those in.power sow the seeds of division at all levels.
They are afraid of us, only we as the masses havnt caught on to that.
Cue the dislikes to prove my point.
I find that the British public generally are so apathetic to the things that matter. Yes, we all sit there and moan about everything but never take any direct action, other than the tree huggers. We should have mass protesting about our useless council, the dreadful transport services, fuel prices, etc., but in the end we all just sit there and take it. If something was organised, that I could be sure hundreds, if not thousands of others would attend, I would join in, I just wish I actually had the nous to get something off the ground myself.
it needs the old school to start the ball rolling
You only have to look at the obnoxious postings on this site to know that those “seeds of division” have grown into mature trees.
oil companies are making billions in profit i agree with the old school it need the people now to stand firm and prove a point
thought all the supermarkets on the island closed down or will
Bizarre thing to think, we have new ones opening up
And again… go talk to someone!?
The petrol companies are taking the piss generally. Those who can remember fuel prices in the 80’s will know that diesel used to cost half what petrol did. That is because diesel is less refined than petrol and is therefore cheaper to produce. When more and more vehicles were made with diesel engines, all of a sudden the cost of diesel shot up unnecessarily as fuel producers cashed in.
Hardwoods, by the way, have been the cheapest forecourt on the island for petrol for weeks, so I am not using the rip off supermarkets until their prices fall even lower.
You won’t be able to get any diesel this afternoon at Tesco by apx 14:00hrs, as they did not get the delivery today, due to their boat not running. This came from the staff in the garage
Not a war if none of them lose out. It’s more like a game of chicken – how long can we shaft people before we drop the price?
Whooo 6p a litre! So about £3 a fill. About time but still vary far off 22% of the peak prices so still ripping us off even with this discount.
Tesco should be ashamed after having to react to ASDA and they should all be ashamed for profiteering.
I started ordering shopping online on the island because i got fed up of seeing rough looking people again and again and again
To many mirrors I guess
Costs me £1.12 to do 100 miles. Fossil fuel is dead to me. The service on my car is just checking the brakes.
Yes for now. So what sort of power made the fantasy car you drive. Don’t give it the big one. Do your homework.
Thats probably what you get a year working on the island
Yawn. Electric car bore. Are you vegan too? We’ll find out – they can’t resist dropping that into every conversation
I think you need to recheck your figures.Unless you charge it for free at Tesco’s every day.
And how much did the car cost you in the first place 30k? That’s a lot of petrol
Where do you get your car serviced Fred? Just want to know so that I can avoid them like the plague if they have told you that the only thing that needs servicing on an electric car is the brakes!
How can islanders afford to pay for petrol anyway they’re all on low paid jobs and seasonal jobs. Everyone knows the island is about 100 years behind the mainland in everything.
That’s what we like about it! It’s why tourists visit. Those who don’t like it can always.move.
Why Island Critic? You get on in your world and let those of us that love the Island enjoy it. That’s why there’s a ferry so people like you can leave
Tesco absolutely been taking the Mick ,if Westridge lowered their prices there would be a massive queue. But Tesco know they’re the only ones this side of island without spending an hour trying to get to Morrisons in Lake. They should be trying to help people there’s no reason now why the price of petrol is still so high ,funny how they can suddenly drop it ,probably realized everyone going to Harwoods. Boycott money grabbing Tesco!
The price of fuel has hardly been slashed it’s still £190.7p so basically £1.91p a litre which is still 91p a litre too much rip off britain strikes again there is no excuse or justifiable reason for fuel and the cost of living to be the way it is other than the nazi tory governments trying make themselves richer as fast as they can cos they are a bunch of corrupt nazi’s that have screwed the country and the people over and know they are on their way out and if they stopped sending tens of millions of pounds of our money to Ukraine which is nothing to do with us we wouldn’t be in this situation.
Of course! I forgot how much UK prospered under successive labour govts. Bell
How quickly people forget what a mess the Tory’s had to take over. Remember the note the Labour treasurer left? – The letter, which was dated April 6, 2010, says “Dear Chief Secretary, I’m afraid there is no money. Kind regards and good luck!.”
War at the pumps? Watch out for the Molotov cocktails!!
All the supermarkets are taking the p*SS big time. Could afford to knock off another 20/30 pence a litre off if they really wanted to!
Come on Tesco, we need action on your slogan EVERY LITTLE HELPS.
The wholesale price of petrol, this is what garages pay for it has fallen by 20p a litre since the beginning of June, add on to that the 5p reduction in fuel duty.
One litre of fuel should be about £1.50.
So it is blatant profiteering. They are trying to recoup some of the profits they lost during the pandemic and using the war in Ukraine to justify the current prices.
