A project to install new safety railings at Ventnor’s Rene Howe Walk is nearing completion, with the footway due to reopen to the public as scheduled on 8th March. The 27-week scheme has involved excavating Shore Hill for new reinforced concrete foundations into which new bespoke railings have been fixed. In total, 140m of new railings will line the walkway as it curves down alongside Ventnor’s much-loved Victorian Cascade. The entire route has also been resurfaced and bollards installed to protect both pedestrians and road users. While the footway will reopen on 8th March, work will continue on the lower section of the footway adjacent to Shore Hill. This is due to recent wet weather delaying the pouring of concrete, leading to the postponement of the manufacture and installation of the bespoke railings along this section. However, this work is set to be completed in time for the Easter weekend. Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the bottom of Shore Road to enable a safe walkway for pedestrians. Project Manager Nathaniel Saunders has said:
“We would like to thank residents and businesses for their patience and support during these works – which have not been without challenge given the exposed site and extreme weather conditions experienced this winter. “We hope residents and visitors will enjoy making use of the improved footway which is a key route down to the town’s seafront.”

Even though the Footway is closed, so many idiots are walking in the road
making it dangerous for motorists.
The idiots who walk in the road should be fined.
Dont worry, motorists will get revenge, I reckon some oldy will be driving on the footpath by June.
How else are they ment to get down there then you bell? Not like you drive fast down that hill anyway
Not only is your grammar sh*t, don’t be a T’wat all your life, there are a few other ways
down to the Esplanade, stupid B’llocks!.
Pedestrians are allowed to walk on roads you idiot. Cars don’t own the roads.

Esplanade, stupid B’llocks!.
I don’t think this sort of depressingly infantile and aggressive language should be permitted on here. Island Echo deserves better. It can teach those readers what is acceptable and what isn’t. It will encourage better mannered readers to come forward.
Pedestrians have right of way. Always. If you’re a driver you really should have read the highway code…
Not in the road they don’t.
Especially when they are walking in the centre of the road.
So many idiots out there.
Obviously a woman driver
Pedestrians always have right of way. Read the Highway Code you moron. I suspect that you don’t actually have a driving licence and never took your test. There are loads of unlicenced drivers on our roads causing accidents. Some random police checks in Ventnor would be a very good idea.
It’s not dangerous in any way if you have an ounce of intelligence and common sense.
