Vectis Brass Band’s composer in residence, Alan Ingram, has written a composition titled A Song to Michael to commemorate 1 of its founding members, Michael Collis, who passed away earlier this year. Vectis Brass Band is a community organisation based in Ryde and has been entertaining audiences on the Island since 1947. Michael joined the band aged 8 and played with the band since its inception until just before his passing. Michael was a stalwart of the band, always helping encourage of the younger players to learn and love music as well as being such a committed member of the band for such a long time. ‘A Song to Michael’ features the tuba section of the band – the instrument Michael played and loved. Musical Director Jay Taylor said:
“We are truly heartbroken to hear the news of Michael’s passing, he was such a kind and generous band member who was so dedicated to the development of brass music on the Island. Alan has composed such a beautiful piece of music and we’re looking forward to sharing it with our audiences.”
The band will play this piece as a tribute at the next concert on Thursday 30th May, 19:30 at St Saviour’s Church in Shanklin. Entry is free with a raffle, refreshments and a retiring collection for the church bells and the band. The band will also play at Rylstone Gardens in Shanklin every Thursday evening in June, July and August at 20:00.

Poor nipper all the best !
I hope the young boy is okay,
Sending my best wishes.
Saw the commotion, hope he’s going to be ok.
Higher railings might be a good idea, so many families let their
children walk unattended along the revetment wall a disaster waiting to
happen.
IW Council need to make the island a safe place for everyone.
There are still no railings at Shanklin where a number of years ago a vehicle
landed on top of an holidaymaker and sadly killed him.
Health and Ssfety on the Island is poor in 2024
Parental responsibility.
This is the revetment a few feet above the beach, although, it is quite slippy with all the algae on the concrete, along with all the mud.
Fascinating. I bet the winter nights fly by in your house.
Coincidentally, I fell over yesterday on the revetment because of the mud , it was at the time the emergency vehicles were there.Fortunately my injury was to my pride and my biggest concern was that nobody saw me slip, luckily I didn’t fall over the wall and I just have a couple of bruises ,i hope the injured child will get well very soon .It might not be fascinating but please be more careful than me .
didn’t think you were allowed on the revetment so serves you right
You’re the sort of person that has a fire extinguisher in every room and wears a crash helmet when using the stairs
Well, interestingly, patches of the re etment have been pressure washed with bleach about a month ago, but some areas haven’t, I nearly slipped myself on the edge, due to a van being parked across the revetmeng. Don’t underestimate how slippery algae and mud on concrete can be.
Typical health and safety comment. If you think railings are the answer why stop there? Drain the sea while you’re about it to prevent drowning. It’s because of H&S overkill that responsibility for one’s own actions has leaked away.
never going to happen been like it for decades its in a crap state as it is ..bogs permanatly shut by hinks can’t afford to fix them..
I hope the lad makes a full recovery. I think we all wish him well
How awful ! Must be so scary for all. Really hope the Boy is going to be okay.
The accident happened in an instant. Sandown Inshore Life Boat, St John’s Ambulance, RNLI and IOW Ambulance Service should all be commended for their amazing response within just a few minutes. My thoughts and best wishes are with the young boy and his family who were just having a lovely family day out. Stay strong and pull through.
Well said Mojo
mojo, i have NEVER read a response like yours, we do have the best. also I hope he is like me when i was a kid. I fell I bounced and I bruised, but I got up again.
Isn’t the revetment officially closed at the moment? That would scupper any claim.
It’s open from the Shanklin end as far as the cafe according to the road sign I saw yesterday
I bet the parents are beside themselves with worry. I know this is odd to you but accidents do happen and we are so lucky to have such wonderful emergency services.
No, the parents are actually sat in the hospital wondering how their son is going to recover from this, this is such a sick comment and so disrespectful to the family involved!!!
You are disgusting!
You are a sick human being! That is someone’s child, someone’s grandchild, someone’s siblings. I’m sure the welfare of that child is their highest priority! Don’t tarnish everyone with your brush! Rot in hell!!
Your a muppet the poor kid hurt himself especially on mother’s day the last thing the parents are thinking is money ! you stupid idiot
I am disgusted at all the nasty comments made here were you all. Saints in your youth it doesn’t brand him a yob poor kid is in a lot of pain and his family are worried sick It could have so easily been worse so leave off with the nasty comments The saying if you can’t say nothing nice don’t say nothing at all Get well soon lad, and nice job to all emergency services who helped
Strange comment to make, I would imagine any decent person would wish a child well whoever they are !
Let me guess your one off them old farts who thinks off themselves selfish old guy your time will end
The boy was playing with a football immediately prior to his fall – it was not really a sensible place to be doing so, especially with the numbers of passers-by and dogs. Nevertheless It’s a big fall onto concrete, rocks and stones and it was a horrific accident to witness. I sincerely hope that he makes a full recovery in time.
He’ll learn from his mistake. That’s life!
Absolutely idiot u r , let’s hope nothing happens to u or your family in the future
can’t believe people can say things like this !!!
Get a life !! Who has said about suing !!! Bunch of idols a lot of people are
can’t you all just think of the poor little boy and his family right now
Some shockingly unpleasant comments and insinuations on here. A small child is in hospital with serious head injuries and some people are suggesting it’s some sort of insurance scam or that it’s OK if the child is ‘feral’. If you’ve got nothing nice to say, say nothing.
NHS isn’t free if your a upstanding citizen with a job you’ll be paying to the system for 40 years plus so what’s free about that
