Local weather forecasters IW Met Service are warning of the risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms later this evening (Thursday) and overnight into Friday morning.
A scattering of thunderstorms are expected to develop in the English Channel to the South of the Isle of Wight. These thunderstorms and torrential downpours will slowly move northwards towards the Island as the night goes on.
Current projections suggest that the heaviest rain and most frequent lightning – which could be very frequent – will remain to the South and that the storms will weaken somewhat as they as they reach landfall. However, forecasters say they certainly cannot rule out 1 or 2 of the showers/storms impacting the Island as the night goes on.
A yellow weather warning has been issued as some of the downpours could see some very large quantities of rain falling over a short space of time. The heaviest downpours could see 20-30mm of rain falling, although many places are unlikely to see this amount.
