A 3-car shunt has resulted in the closure of a main Isle of Wight route this afternoon (Thursday).
The collision on The Downs Road near the junction with the Newport Shute, has involved a Mini, a Daihatsu and a Kia Picanto – all vehicles were travelling towards Brading. The force of the impact has left all 3 vehicles with minimal damage.
Island Echo understands the occupants of the vehicles have been able to exit the vehicle themselves.
Police have closed the road between Downend and Knighton Shute. Fire crews from Ryde and Newport are also in attendance.
The Island’s road network has only just recovered from the delays following a 2-vehicle collision on Wootton’s Kite Hill earlier this afternoon, as first reported by Island Echo.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area for the time being.
UPDATE – The road has now reopened in both directions.

How? Bad driving yet again?
Probably speeding, that’s the usual reason for all
the shunts.
That is a massive assumption. The usual reason for shunts is because someone in front brakes for no reason or because someone behind is not paying proper attention and doesn’t realise the person in frnt is braking. Given the cars involved, speeding woud not be indicated but if you want to indulge in wild speculation perhaps it might be open to suggestion that these were elderly drivers slowing down to ook at the view with no awareness of those around them.
I suggest you take a drive along the Downs
and see for yourself, the majority of vehicles
speed like numpties.
That’s what happens on a lawless island with
NO speed camera’s.
Time for the Council to install speed camera’s
islandwide.
The biggest problem is ISLAND ROADS, roads closed everywhere you go,
this bunch of idiots just love shutting roads down.
Today was the perfect storm. Main road Wootton closed. Downs road closed. Sandown at 4.30 PM gridlocked . Knighton narrows gridlocked. Took me 2 hrs from Bembridge to shide . Please please please put in a NO RIGHT TURN from Downs Road into Newport Shute.
There are too many roadworks during the busiest time
of the year.
Havenstreet Road Closed as well. Also needs No Left Turn from Downs Road in Westerly Direction into Newport Shute it’s nearly impossible for a car to turn left into Newport Shute without having to reverse back onto the main Downs Road with no visibility.
Totally agree it was manic yesterday, everywhere.
People are driving to fast, to close to each other. Today on Downend Road a van got right up close behind me. sounding his horn because I never pulled out right in front of a car that had his indicators on to go around the roundabout. He stayed so close to me he could no see the ‘road close sign’ as he was indicating to turn into the road that was closed. Because he could not see the sign and almost drove into it. That could have been someone crossing the road that almost got hit.
They race up there, I have seen boy racers with walkie talkie radios who actually think they are on a race track, how can this be legal ??? Friday night is the worst. Every single Morning between 07.00 & 07.30 this horrendous moped comes through Bembridge village, I would love to put a stinger welcome for him. . .
Police should patrol the Downs and the Military road
24/7, they would make millions of pounds in fines.
Absolute useless driving yet again..Took my wife an hour to get home well done to all involved..for your shit driving standards..
Give your wife an extra hour away from the goon
