The Cedars Pub in Wootton has received a 1 out of 5 food hygiene rating after inspectors found multiple issues including signs of mold growth inside the ice machine, raw meat being stored next to bread and an electric fly killer located above the food preparation area.
There were a number of other issues identified of varying degrees of seriousness but the overall score of 45 means that the establishment has received a ‘major improvement necessary’ rating.
When inspectors visited, they found that the temperature probe was not functioning properly and that no checks were being made to confirm that minced-meat products such as beef burgers were being cooked to a safe temperature.
Various foods were also found to be past their use by date including goats cheese and caramelised onion tarts more than a month past their use-by date and smoked avocado which was 2 weeks past its use by date. Charlotte Cream was also found to be past its use-by date and other items in the fridge were not date labelled at all.
The inspection also found that ‘raw meat was being stored on the top of the hot holding unit with ready to eat food/cheese amongst it’, ‘wrapped ham was being stored in the raw meat fridge next to wrapped raw meat’ and ‘raw burgers and other raw meats were stored next to bread in the upright freezers.’ Furthermore, some food items in the back room fridge were not covered and all of these issues present a risk of physical contamination.
1 of the more shocking findings was that ‘the location of the electric insectocutor above the food preparation area may lead to the contamination of food by dead insects’.
Other issues identified included an inaccessible wash basin and dirty chopping boards, cloths and tea towels. The general standard of hygiene was also found to be unsatisfactory including hand contact surfaces, a dusty kitchen ceiling and the inside of the ice machine showing some signs of mold growth.
The condition of the fridges was also highlighted with split seals and the microwave was found to have plastic de-laminating on the inside. Furthermore, walls were found to be defective with the surfaces behind the sinks flaking and unable to be properly cleaned.
Lastly, the inspectors found no evidence that staff had undergone food hygiene training or instruction.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 15
Compliance with structural requirements – 10
Confidence in management/control procedures – 20
Total score: 45 (1 rating)
The Cedars have been approached for a statement

I think you’ll be waiting a long time for a statement! First the Sloop then Cedars, not looking good for Wooton!
I think you’ll find the sloop did make a comment…
The hygiene inspectors should check out some of the smaller pubs in the rural areas of south wight too, one of those is really disgusting. The pub that keeps changing it’s name to hide the bad reviews.
So many establishments on the Island are filthy, you are right about changing their
Names.
Once a filth hole, always a filth hole.
Most was appalling and far worse than others with one star, why was it not closed until improvement?. Don’t agree though -other raw meats were stored next to bread in the upright freezers. It was covered I’m sure many people have frozen burgers , sausages etc next to bread etc in Freezer. It states freezer – raw meat?.
Disgusting. Such places and the owners are fortunate that most holiday trade don’t read the information on the Echo so their holiday trade doesn’t suffer.
The whole staff needs an intensive course paid for by them in hygiene and food handling
It should be shut down immediatly
I got a bad tummy after eating there on Thursday. Thought I’d picked up a bug elsewhere but now it makes sense.
How depressing because the report is all things that need not have happened. It shows you that the owners just have total disregard and disrespect for customers.
We rarely eat out now, firstly the rising cost, in particular The Cedars. Meals had increased by at least 30%, and poor quality compared with previous owner. Pity as we often went there for birthday, etc, the previous owner was great and food up to standard.
Need more regular checks.
If star rating that low shut immediately so public health is not at risk.
No excuse for poor hygiene…
Vote with your feet and wallet !!!!!!!
Now we know where the expression waiter there is a fly in my soup comes from
Went there once. The landlord was so rude I walked straight out vowing I’d never
go back and I never will.
It should be closed. Some one should be prosecuted. No excuses for this stupidity.
There must be some cheap meal deals going on there now. Get in! I’ll have extra fly’s with mine please.
Gross!! It never looks inviting… Don’t know anyone that’s actually been there!
My wife and I eat Sunday lunch there every fortnight. Never been poorly, the landlord is never rude, and yes prices have gone up, as they have everywhere. Would never eat a burger in any establishment, so can’t comment on them. Training is required for sure, all faults can be rectified, and inspectors can visit again to verify. Next.
It’s not a good place to go…
You must be easily pleased. It mentions more than burgers. And I for one was unwell. I didn’t have the burger if that helps you decide where you want to spend your money any better.
Training should of been done before opening obviously and no one needs training to recognise a sell by date I’d hope! Its lazy and disrespectful.
People with health issues or low immune systems can get seriously ill from contaminated food if affected it can be more than a day on the loo for some!
These rogue landlords never care until they are caught. Fact, people can die from poor hygiene practices in eating establishments. The person responsible should face criminal charges, even more so when you can read in these comments that at least one person has been ill after consuming food there. How many others? Jail the person responsible.
So many businesses have poor hygiene
Why buy a pub if you dont care for your customers or dont appreciate the ministry of cooking for people
Island echo, why do you not let me exercise my freedom of speech? Does the truth hurt? Again as I said in a previous story where you allowed atrocious language being used and not allow my words with appropriate language, is kind of personal so again with another screenshot I will say what I want to say…”why buy a pub if your not going to appreciate the ministry of cooking for people and not take care of your customers”.
