Work to install new post and rail fencing on The Causeway at Freshwater is to begin next month.
The project by Island Roads will take approximately 3 weeks and will mean the current pedestrian safety restraints on either side of the road will be replaced ‘like for like’ with oak posts and railings.
The Causeway will be closed to vehicles during the project but pedestrian access will be retained.
The work can begin now that discussions with the Isle of Wight Council over a suitable form of replacement restraint have concluded and also as the various ecological permissions required to progress works in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty have now been received.
Keith Gourlay, Construction Manager, says:
“This is both a popular and environmentally-sensitive site and we needed to ensure the new post and rail fencing was both in keeping with the surroundings and also that the necessary environmental permissions were in place.
“I am pleased to say this process has been completed and we are looking forward to completing the work which will mean the temporary barriers can be removed.”
A lovely location and we can only hope that the new fencing is sympathetic….and that they feed the birds whilst doing the works!
The present temporary fencing has been a necessary eyesore for some time now so let’s hope this looks the part when done.
I suggest the posts are painted black and white bands as they used to be years ago.
Not only looks more quaint but is practical in making them clear in most fog etc
Yet I doubt ascetic appeal counts for much now.
Oak posts apparently, if you read the article.
About time, they look grim
3 weeks? More likely 6 months if Island Roads are involved…
1 to do the work, 3 to give the site several good coats of looking at!
