Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a takeaway in Shanklin this evening (Friday).
Several appliances from Shanklin, Sandown, Ryde, Ventnor and Newport are in attendance on Atherley Road, where a fire has broken out at AJ‘s takeaway.
Crews donned in breathing apparatus have entered the building in a bid to bring the situation under control and stop the fire spreading.
The Aerial Ladder Platfrom from Newport and the Incident Command Unit from Newport are also on scene, although at this stage the ALP has not been required.
UPDATE @ 19:40 – A significant fire has now been extinguished by the swift-acting firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, who have prevented the blaze from ripping through the building.
Main Jets, hose reels and a covering jet have been utilised to bring the situation under control.
2x Positive Pressure Ventilation is now being used to rid the building of smoke, which includes an adjoining property.
UPDATE @ 19:50 – Station Officer Julian Fountaine has confirmed to Island Echo that the fire, which has been tackled from both the front and rear of the property, has been extinguished.
1 gentleman inside the building at the time of the fire broke out managed to escape uninjured.
The fire service understand the blaze broke out in a fryer. It’s also said that it spread to the extractor unit.
Thankfully, all other persons are accounted for with the flat above and to the side empty.
Firefighters are now working to move in and around the premises further to damp down the area and ensure the fire is completely out.
Atherley Road is closed in both directions as a result of this incident.
UPDATE @ 23:15 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has now stood down from the incident.
Cancel the defib order, no longer needed.

I just hope there isn’t to much damage and the owners manage to get everything sorted out on the plus side nobody got hurt as I passed it about 6:45pm and it looked really busy.

Absolutely Banko, Sadly we have a generation of individuals who like to try and belittle others because of their own self low esteem ! There are people who look for others misfortune and get off on the fact that something bad has happened but on top of this it is not enough so they manipulate the story and make it worse or they simply like the negative comments of other people to fuel hatred.
