The sun shone through just in time for the annual Mardi Gras parade, which returned to the streets of Ryde last Saturday (6th July). Isle of Wight Mardi Gras has established itself as a highlight of the Island’s events calendar, attracting thousands of visitors. It is the first of many big events in Ryde over the Summer period and is a precursor to the more traditional carnivals. ‘The Story of Carnival’ was the theme of this year’s extravaganza, which saw around 20 local schools and groups come together to showcase colour, culture and creativity. Highlights of the 2024 parade included 3 magnificent Caribbean-inspired hobby horses, known as burrokeets, as well as the mystical Green Man created in collaboration with Thingumajig Theatre. 3 striking big head puppets brought the streets of Ryde to life.

Fantastic event, and the weather held up nicely for everyone in the end! The costumes were superb and everyone seemed to have a great time.
me kids bored waist of time most foreiners an all
I expect those ‘foreiners’ know how to spell though and know something about grammar. ‘Waist’ what now?
Did you use your forehead to write that?
English not YOUR 1st language?
Do you think breeding was a good idea?
Genuinely curious on behalf of humanity.
fabulous reply, well done and the costumes and the people made it an amazing day
“waist of time”
isn’t that the pinched-in bit in an hour glass / egg timer ??
I agree. It was very atmospheric and great to see so many children involved, many of whom had been involved in making their own costumes.
