Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue has mobilised to Lynnbottom Household Waste and Recycling Centre this lunchtime (Monday) where a fire has broken out in one of the tip’s skips.
It was just before 12:24 that the fire was first spotted and became visible to staff, with smoke issuing from one of the large waste skips.
2 fire appliances and a water carrier are on scene with firefighters utilising hose reels to dampen down the contents of the skip, which has been emptied out using one of the site’s lorries.
The gates to Lynnbottom have been closed with local residents being turned away whilst the situation is dealt with.
It is unknown at this time how long the site will remain closed for, but it is expected to be several hours.
It was in September 2024 that a larger blaze was tackled at Lynnbottom, with a total of 3 skips involved on that occasion.
UPDATE @ 14:49 – Lynnbottom has now fully re-opened following the successful tackling of the fire.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“There are no reported injuries and our team reacted to ensure the safety of themselves and the public.
“We can confirm the HWRC will reopen at 2pm today with the CWRC open from 4pm.
“If you had a booking today that was cancelled due to the closure, you can turn up today at any time. If you cannot attend this afternoon, please re-book via our online system.
“We would like to thank the fire service for their prompt action in containing this incident.
“We apologise for any inconvenience”.

I would have thought that a recycling center was a very likely place for a fire to start, so why don’t they have their own water supply and hose reels so they can out the fire without the need to call the fire brigade?
