A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery following an incident at a Co-op store in Ryde this morning (Sunday).
Police were called to the Southern Co-op on West Street at 09:58 to reports that a man had entered the shop and threatened staff.
It’s said the male demanded cash from the till, but brave workers refused to hand over any money.
The man subsequently left the store. Nothing was stolen.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. He remains in custody at Newport Police Station.
The Co-op was closed for a time with a notice on the door stating that, due to unforeseen circumstances, the store was to remain closed until further notice. However, the store is once again welcoming customers following the conclusion of on-scene investigations by Police.
UPDATE TUESDAY – 37-year-old Matthew Oxley has been remanded in custody after being charged with attempted robbery.
