UPDATED: Islanders are being warned about a cold-calling scam which resulted in a Wootton resident’s tree being cut down with demands for a large amount of cash.
The Isle of Wight Council say they are aware that two men cold-called a woman’s house in Wootton last week claiming they were working for the council, stating they had received a complaint from neighbours about a tree on the property which needed cutting back.
Island Echo understands the pair cut down the palm tree and demanded over £800 in cash from the homeowner, who did not have that amount of cash in the home. The scamming pair, who drove a silver Ford Transit, had to leave the property and return at a later date.
The suspicious woman spoke to residents and the Council, who advised her not to hand over the money. Upon the return of the two men on Thursday, Police were called and attended the scene.
A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“These men do not work for the council. All our staff carry photo ID and we would not cold-call a house to undetake tree work.
“Our trading standards service and Hampshire Police are currently investigating the incident”.

UPDATE THURSDAY: Island Echo understands the two men, both from the mainland, have been arrested and released on Police bail pending further enquiries.
