An analysis of admission prices nationwide has found that the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary – based in Sandown – is the cheapest zoo in England for an older child (aged up to 14 years old). As the summer and warmer climate are just around the corner, you may be looking for affordable days out to enjoy with the kids. Outdoor Toys have researched the best zoos in the UK with the most affordable children’s ticket prices. A ticket for the Isle of Wight’s Animal Sanctuary for the older child costs £12, compared with 2nd-placed Cotswold Wildlife Park in Oxfordshire which costs £13.50 and 3rd-placed Marwell Zoo, which will set you back £13.94. Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is not the cheapest zoo in the UK as a whole, however. Belfast Zoo in Northern Ireland is the least expensive in the whole country, with an admission price of just £6.75 for an older child.

Er, but this place wants to express it’s not a ZOO, hence why they changed the name to SANCTARY. So, they – or rather than original report – can’t claim to be the cheapest zoo in the south because it isn’t one.
It’s also the worst zoo !!!!
I imagine it is so cheap because it is hard to justify a higher price when it only takes about half an hour to look round! It’s hardly on a par with Colchester Zoo or Marwell is it?
Just costs holiday makers an arm and a leg to get to it
Because it’s not a for-profit zoo, but a sanctuary with charitable status. Every penny raised from tickets or grant funding goes on costs.
Get your facts right IE. It is an animal sanctuary, not a zoo. There is a very big difference between the two.
But, it is a zoo:
‘zoo noun an establishment which maintains a collection of wild animals, typically in a park or gardens, for study, conservation, or display to the public’
Which part of that dictionary description of the word Zoo wouldn’t apply?
Incorrect.
Zoo is short for “zoological garden”. In other words a place whose primary purpose is to allow members of the public to gawp at captive wild animals.
Wildheart Trust is primarily a not-for-profit conservation that accepts visitors to learn about what they do and support their activities.
Sanctuaries rescue animals who cannot live in the wild and can survive only in captivity. A zoo takes almost all animals, regardless of their ability to survive in the wild, usually for us to merely ogle at. Species slavery, if you will.
Zoos and so called sanctuaries, do the same thing, cage animals for the masses to gawp at. It used to be called “Sandown Zoo” that was until people began to stop going to them anymore and then suddenly it’s a so called sanctuary.
Its also the most dirty and run down too
Truth obv hurt sad red thumbers
There have been lots of improvements over the last couple of years .. remember the animals welfare always comes first….
Donate some money then so they can improve it
They are actually trying really hard to improve every aspect of the sanctuary and care for the animals. They do not run on a massive budget that most establishments have as they are a charity. They can only improve one thing at a time so why don’t you give them a break Liz. It’s about the animals!
Went there once recently, would never return, run down and too small.
I love going to the wildheart animal sanctuary in sandown and actually support zoppa and natasha, the keepers do a wonderful job looking after these animals that have been ill treated in the past I wish I lived on the island so I could go more often
Probably because there is not much there like other Zoo’s.
Smallest ZOO so therefore it should be the cheapest, a cage is a cage.
