Sandown Carnival has announced that the town’s annual fireworks display will now take place at Easter after the New Year’s Day celebrations were cancelled due to adverse weather. Usually, the popular fireworks display lights up the skies above Sandown on 1st January each year. Sadly, strong winds and heavy rain meant that this year’s event couldn’t go ahead. The decision has now been taken to host an Easter Fireworks Eggstravanganza instead on Saturday 30th March 2024. The fireworks will be set off from the end of the pier at 19:30 with those heading to The Bay advised to find a spot along the Esplanade for the best viewing. “It was a big disappointment for everyone that we couldn’t stage the display on that rainy, windswept day at the start of January. Since then, we’ve been working with Sandown Pier and fireworks company Pains to give Easter crowds the chance to enjoy the spectacular occasion we had planned”
Hopefully nobody sets off a World War Two air raid siren during the event because people will be moaning about it for weeks afterwards.
People should boycott them because fireworks causes distress and misery to animals and people. Shame on them.

Good grief! Holy Saturday is a day of quiet reflection and anticipation for Christians around the world. It is the day between the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday. Holy Saturday, also known as Easter Eve, is a time to mourn the death of Jesus and to prepare for his resurrection, not for letting off fireworks. Who made this utterly stupid and inappropriate decision?
Well said, but people will shout you down and remind you about the fireworks of Diwali which are a symbol of jubilation and are an integral part of the celebration, representing the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
I’m sure that Guy Fawkes would be thrilled that fireworks are now set off in the UK almost every week to remember him by.
