WEST WIGHT MISS VASE FINAL AFTER LEADING PENALTY SHOOTOUT

West Wight were desperately unlucky to have been bested by AFC Solent in a penalty shootout in their Hampshire Vase semi final after an even and hard-fought contest over 90 minutes.
AFC Solent – playing up the slope – took a shock lead in the 7th minute through Callum Gale, who shot past Gearing (0-1).
West Wight equalised 2 minutes from the half time interval when centre forward Jordan Flynn took the ball past Solent keeper Mackenzie Hare before directing it into the empty goal (1-1).
Solent had Hare to thank on the stroke of half time when he fisted a powerful strike over the crossbar to prevent West Wight taking the lead (1-1).
West Wight were unlucky in the 2nd half after having a goal disallowed and a strong penalty appeal for a foul by the goalkeeper on Jude Millar waved away by the referee.
However, despite some powerful shots from both sides, neither side could put the ball past Gearing or Hare to win the game in the 2nd 45 minutes.
Full time: West Wight Reserves 1-1 AFC Solent
In the penalty shootout, George Saunders, Simon Merrett and Harry Dye converted the first 3 spot kicks without mishap.
Ben Gearing then saved Solent’s 3rd penalty.
However, West Wight’s final 2 penalties were off target, with Solent converting theirs to go through to the Hampshire Vase final at the expense of the home side.
Penalties: West Wight Reserves 3-4 AFC Solent
West Wight: Gearing, Winton, Groom, Carey, Dye, Simmons, Moore, Saunders, Flynn, Merrett, Millar Subs: Ring, Clarke, Goddard
