A total of £3000 has been raised for local charities and organisations thanks to the Bestival Ryde Slide, which saw over 300 people slide down the length of Union Street earlier this month.
The event was the brainchild of Cllr Wayne Whittle (pictured left), who first discussed the idea of a giant water slide coming to Ryde on Twitter with the hashtag #Rydeslide. After teaming up with Bestival, the idea became a reality on 12th July and brought thousands of spectators to the town.
A total of 5 Ryde-based charities will now benefit from the money raised, which will be split between Ryde Inshore Rescue, Ryde Arena, The Waterside Pool, The Aspire Project and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s 100 Here 100 There charity fundraiser.
Discussions are already underway to bring the Bestival Ryde Slide back to the streets of Ryde in 2016.
