An Indian/Sri Lankan restaurant in Ryde has been hit with a 1-star hygiene after inspectors uncovered expired food, dirty conditions and poor food safety practices during a recent inspection.
Curry Leaf (formerly Kumma Kitchen), located on Union Street, was visited by Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health team on 4th February, with officers identifying multiple breaches of food safety regulations requiring urgent action.
Among the concerns were significant failures in stock control, with out-of-date food found on site and prepared items in fridges not labelled with use-by dates. Inspectors also flagged unreliable record keeping, with temperature logs appearing to show identical readings day after day.
A number of ingredients, including spices and dried goods, were found to be past their best before dates. These included whole haldi (turmeric) dated December 2024, golden raisins dated March 2025, 5 spice mix dated 30th January 2025 and whole cloves dated November 2025. All were voluntarily disposed of during the inspection.
Inspectors described the overall standard of cleanliness as poor, highlighting dirty ovens, grease build-up, unclean food preparation areas and worn, unhygienic equipment. Chopping boards, woks and saucepans were found to be heavily worn and in a condition that could increase the risk of contamination.
Outside the premises, the refuse area was found to be in a dirty and cluttered state, with waste including oil drums, containers and discarded items posing a potential pest risk.
Concerns were also raised about staff training, with food handlers unable to demonstrate basic knowledge of food safety requirements, including correct temperature control for high-risk foods.
Inspectors further identified failings in allergen management, with no clear system in place to inform customers about allergenic ingredients. Staff were unable to provide accurate information about allergens in dishes when questioned.
Additional issues included damaged flooring, improper storage of sauces requiring refrigeration, unsecured food items creating a risk of contamination and inadequate handwashing facilities due to a lack of suitable drying materials.
Island Echo has contacted Curry Leaf for comment, but no response has been received.

Surely it should be closed down it’s disgusting how these establishments are allowed to continue to be in business? Everyone should boycott it then it will have to close down because of no customers.
Another one on the ‘avoid list’.
Safer to eat at home thesedays and cheaper.
Such filth holes should be closed down, personally I find
these inspections worthless because nothing happens.
People need to know, persons visiting the island won’t know
it’s a filth hole.
A huge sticker should be displayed on their window
warning people.
Sadly this is one of the reasons I avoid foreign food establishments, it’s personal taste I guess. It’s a shame because the iow suffers as a whole because of this. It should be closed down until further notice.
That is very true, but too be honest since the pandemic
so many english eateries have become filthy.
There are only an handful of places I would eat at
thesedays.
I’m presuming there’s a reason it’s taken over two months for this to be published then? Hope no one has been taken ill from eating here since then at least!
Such establishments should be closed down
what do these inspections achieve!
Most of these types of places are shit holes.
Spot on, my idea of foreign food is from a supermarket.
Cleaner and cheaper.
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to make sure people know what they’re doing before they even are allowed to open a restaurant!?
just saying :/
Am I missing something or do I need to go to
Specsavers
WHERE ARE THE HYGIENE SCORES ON THE DOORS????,
Your not obliged to put them up if changes made since this report which might be the case .xx
They should be forced to display their scores so persons
don’t make a mistake and visit such filth holes.
Bell end
Were you born a bell end, or did it come over a period of time
NUMPTY!
