Islanders are being warned that some bin/sack collections may be temporarily suspended today (Thursday).
The Isle of Wight Council and Amey say that this action is for the safety of its collection crews, due to the heatwave.
A Level 5 heat warning is in place across the Isle of Wight and southern regions, as reported by Island Echo.
Amey, which manages the Isle of Wight waste and recycling collections, says the following areas may be affected:
- Cowes (recycling)
- Shanklin (refuse)
- Arreton (refuse)
- Merstone (refuse)
- Luccombe (refuse)
If your bin/sack is not collected today:
- Leave the bin/sack out and it will be collected as priority tomorrow (Friday)
- If your waste or recycling has not been collected by 12 noon on Friday, report to the council online at www.iwight.com/waste
Natasha Dix, Strategic Manager for the Environment, has said:
“Once again – with the very hot summer we are experiencing, we appreciate this might cause frustration for residents. Please bear with us as we make sure that collection crews are working safely in this heat.
“We will be monitoring the temperatures going forward. Should this change and we have to suspend collections due to the heat, we will let you know through our council social media, local media and our news section on www.iwight.gov.uk

Assisted collections will not be affected.
How ever have we managed for decades during summer?
I think we take these people for granted, they do a job that most of us would not do and these days with so much health and safety they have to wear full high viz clothing made of plastic, In this heat I am surprised not more of them fall to heat exhaustion.
How many summers have had the continual temperatures that we are now seeing?
As it is something you are obviously unaware of, I will answer it: NONE – EVER.
You were obviously not around during the the summer in the 1970’s when the heatwave lasted a longer than this one, everything goes on cycles, come december we willl be moaning about the amount of snow.
Utter rubbish. The temperatures in 1976 were continually around 25-28c with only the odd day over 30c in SE England. The hot weather then started at about the same time as this year.
I was working outside most of the time during that summer, including fighting grass fires in Surrey, so I remember it well
Can’t thank my refuse collectors enough! I offered to re-fill their water bottles in this extreme heat but thankfully they had enough fluids. If they weren’t able to collect the refuse I would completely understand, they are doing a great job under these extremely hot conditions, thank you!
Be telling us next when the massive downpour comes that the bins won’t be collected cos there’ll be too many floods about and the drains can’t cope so more vurst watermains again.Never ends always something
I feel sorry for them they pick up all the rubbish from your houses and take it away and their wages are rubbish too!
I wonder how many of the unsupportive people on here would like to do it for national minimum wage. And that’s if your given the hours to earn that!

It’s hot for everyone roofers tarmac workers all those at Ryde Esplanade at least refuse finish at 2pm before it gets too uncomfortable

Do it in the evening, night and/or dawn. Not rocket science. Other, sensible, countries, so why no here. And it wouldn’t block up the traffic. OK, I’ll stop being stupid, and logical.

My first thought was along similar lines, perhaps just work a bit slower. To be fair to them, they do tend to race around (the guys actually dragging the bins around I mean, not the drivers). Why not go a bit slower, pull in somewhere and stop for a drink of water and to cool down for a while. No-one’s going to complain if their bins aren’t collected till an hour later. Or do they do it so they finish early, I don’t know?
By the way, I have the greatest respect for them, but it’s not a race.
Then we will have complaints about noise at night and the council tax going up for the anti social hours pay???????????????????
No we want to do it midday for the same pay as brain surgeons do their jobs on the north isle.
I don’t get why it’s only these areas affected? Is it noticeably hotter in Shanklin, Arreton etc than other places?
Anyway, just slow down a bit, no need to rush. Take a break occasionally lads. No-one’s going to shout at you if you’re still doing collections in the afternoon.

I am not surprised this heat is unbearable for most but being out in it and lugging trash must be 10 times worse especially with the addition of the high viz clothing.
