Over 90 guests joined the Royal Victoria Yacht Club on 6th July for their annual open day for local people with disabilities, which has been running since 1981. Guests enjoyed trips out on the boats, a BBQ lunch, tea and cakes. There was a variety of vessels to take guests for trips along Wootton Creek but, unfortunately, the strong winds meant they were unable to venture out onto The Solent. More than 30 trips were completed. Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Kate Collins, was joined by the newly-elected Isle of Wight East MP Joe Robertson and Parish Councillor Cheryl Fontana in spending time with guests and exploring Wootton Creek from the water.
Over 60 RVYC members volunteered on the day, which included the boat crews who gave their time and boats free of charge. Lunch and refreshments were prepared and served by caterers DW Hospitality. Medina Foods kindly supplied the food and club members provided cakes for afternoon tea, and gifts for the tombola, which took over £300. Grace’s Bakery kindly donated a large quantity of doughnuts and Island ice creams completed the day’s menu. There was live music throughout the day provided free by local bands ‘Island Jive’ and ‘Run With The Pineapple’, which kept the guests and volunteers tapping their feet along to the music. Next year’s event is planned for Saturday 12th July 2025.
