The main road connecting Ventnor and Whitwell is blocked this afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday) as a result of a 2-car road traffic collision.
Emergency services have been called to the scene on Ventnor Road, just outside the village of Whitwell.
The crash occurred at just before 13:05 on a bend between Dean Farm and Upper Ash Lane.
Island Echo understands 2 vehicles have been involved in the head-on smash.
Motorists are being turned around and are having to divert via Wroxall and Upper Ventnor.
UPDATE @ 13:27 – Police are now on scene and have closed the road in both directions from the junction with Kemming Road. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service is also arriving on scene.
UPDATE @ 13:47 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised to the incident as at least 1 person is trapped inside a vehicle.
Fire crews from Newport and Ventnor and a duty officer are on scene with firefighters working to free those trapped.
A second ambulance and an ambulance officer are now also in scene.
UPDATE @ 14:40 – 2 people have been extricated from a vehicle and passed into the care of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service for conveyance to St Mary’s Hospital.
Recovery agents have arrived at the scene of the crash to remove the vehicles from the highway.
UPDATE @ 15:20 – The road has now reopened.
