Blackwater Mill Residential Home proudly celebrated VE Day with a series of engaging activities and heartfelt tributes to honour the historic occasion.
Residents delved into the spirit of VE Day by immersing themselves in old photographs, including captivating images of the original Victory in Europe Day on May 8, 1945, right here on the Isle of Wight.
The home was adorned with vibrant decorations and a collection of authentic World War II posters, setting the stage for a jam-packed and memorable day. Part 1 of the VE Day celebrations kicked off with a special visit from the Royal British Legion Riders Branch.
Their lovely motorbikes and trikes captured the attention of residents, who thoroughly enjoyed the VE Day talk and dressing up for the occasion. The presence of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch made the veterans at Blackwater Mill feel truly special, and their contribution was immensely appreciated.
The day continued to unfold with an enchanting performance by the Havenstreet Ukulele Group, who serenaded residents with classic tunes. The group’s music resonated throughout the home, and everyone joyfully sang along and tapped their feet to the beat. The Havenstreet Ukulele Group’s presence added an extra layer of merriment and uplifted the spirits of all in attendance.
In addition to the musical performances, residents had the opportunity to explore authentic 1945 VE Day celebration pictures from both London and the Isle of Wight. The activities program was filled with engaging tasks, including VE Day-themed word searches, fill-the-gaps diary entries, spot-the-difference puzzles, colouring activities, and informative fact sheets about VE Day.
Travel In Time, a distinguished speaker, provided an insightful talk on rationing and brought various WW2 artefacts for residents to hold and explore. Among the cherished artefacts, the Oxo cube boxes sparked countless memories and conversations, while the gas masks evoked stories of wartime experiences.
The VE Day celebrations at Blackwater Mill Residential Home were a testament to the strong community spirit and dedication to honouring the sacrifices and triumphs of the past. By coming together, residents and staff created lasting memories and paid tribute to a pivotal moment in history.
